Indian state bans Pepsi and Coke
By Sanjoy Majumder
BBC News, Delhi

NGOs say colas contain high levels of pesticide in India
The Indian state of Kerala has banned the production and sale of Coca Cola and Pepsi following a report that the drinks contain harmful pesticides.

It said it was taking the step because the drinks pose a health risk. Both soft drinks manufacturers have said their products are safe.

Five other states have already announced partial bans on the drinks in schools, colleges and hospitals.

But Kerala is the first to completely ban their production and sale.

The move by the communist government in Kerala in southern India is the most severe reaction to a report released last week by an Indian non-government organisation, the Centre for Science and Environment.

It said tests carried on samples of the drinks across 12 Indian states revealed dangerously high levels of pesticides.

Both Coca Cola and Pepsi have disputed the report's findings, saying their drinks meet international safety standards.

well pepsi and cocacola are another of those big money corporations who don't care about the health of the citizens of the developing world. What i think they should do is apply the same standards to manufacturing their drinks for indians as they do for countries of the west. it is only naturally that governments would wanna protect their citizens and ban the drinks. I would do the same cause if someone gives you a message that your health in their eyes is worth less than another person's health what would you do? Furthermore I really think that pepsi and cocacola should decrease their prices in the developing world as I lived in a developing country and let me tell you it is not cheap for people there to buy a bottle of pepsi or coke (in comparison to the wages they are earning)
cheers.wink

well they are not priced very high !
They cost a rupee or more or sometimes just the same in comparision with the Indian brands of softdrinks.
But Indian brands are much better . For example Fruity (mango juice) which is not aerated and tastes better.

well i hope they dont cut their price... it will refrain people from buying them and drinking pesticides....

Anu

I am not sure about india but in nigeria they used to cost 20 naira a bottle (this was when i was a kid in 1998) don't know about now. but the vast majority of the people there who were poor were making 100 naira a week. I mean they could buy themselves four meals of their usual cassava (this was what the poor usually ate) with 20 naira. Anyways I think people would be better off not spending their money on that drink anyways as it has been pointed out they carry pesticides and with all the different diseases people are dying of in developing countries who needs more.
I just wanted to point out the injustice in the way they are pricing their drinks in the third world.
cheerswink

Anu

When Coca-Cola came back to India in 1993, it swallowed Parle's soft drink business and just kept Thumbs Up from the product line.

What I want to know is whether there are any local manufacturers of soft drinks in India? If yes, did the NGO check the contents of their products as well?

Putting a ban on pepsi witout a reliable replacement is not advisable as this company plays a major role in event especially third world country. Having them out without a proper dialogue would only cause more pain for the masses in the third world country. I strongly believe if the govt. put upa a scheme to check the content of this product everybody will enjoy at the end.

there are lot of Local manufacturers of soft drinks in India but their market is usually limited to a particular region or a town.i havent come across a single brand in Mumbai but i have seen many locally made cola drinks in kerala.

There are also fruit juices like Frooty and Starship etc which saw a rise in their sales after the Coca Cola and Pepsico incident.
I am not sure whether the tests were conducted on the locally made drinks but then they are hardly known enough, at least as far as the aerated drinks are concerned.
Frooty has its own market and to cut into that Coca Cola released its own mango fruit drink called Maaza which is also quite popular.

ah, the days when coca-cola used to cost 1 naira in nigeria (way back in the mid 90s). now a bottle costs ~100 naira. although, that probably has a lot to do with the weakening currency.

i wouldnt drink it even if it is for free ! although i dont mind people who drink it ...
it has more to do with protesting against the exploitation of resources that they do then the actual content of their drinks !

Yes kikitennis ,
it surely does! we kids had a wild time during the army get togethers where we used to get the colas and shake it up and then release the spray on our friends !!!

and the junior staff had a tough time chasing us out of the lounge and the luxurious sofa sets in the Ante room ...
big grin

Cheers
Anu

It's interesting that those studies showed dangerous levels of pesticides in Pepsi and Coca-Cola. I don't think Pepsi and Coca-Cola should be as widely consumed as they are today (being basically pure sugar) but I find it doubtful that companies like Pepsi and Coca-Cola would put out products full of pesticides. As companies I'm assuming they have pretty strict standards, and since there honestly aren't really any biological elements in their beverages, I'd be really surprised if they contained massive amounts of pesticides, unless there's something seriously wrong with one of their factories...

If these products are to be banned or at least, regulated in some way, I'd much prefer it to be done on a health basis. The place to start would be in schools, which really shouldn't be offering Coke and related products to their students when the nutritional benefit is a big fat zero...

"pretty strict standards" hehe that is quite funny, mikael everyone knows that corporations will do anything to make or save money especially in third world countries. anyways another reason for not drinking it would be based on what mikael pointed out about the sugar content (it should be banned in the west too or at least limited).
cheers

well about pepsi, coke and pesticides! i am from an NGO myself. but my worry abut the tests done by the NGO (invloved in this case ) is that they did not declare where they got the samples from. they went ahead and declared the reports. some state govt.s did not seem to doubt the report and banned them.

i agree with the question that why did the NGO not test other local soft drink.

also my logic says that no company will add pesticides on thier own. why would they? they must be treating the source water in thier production process. so the regula water that we drink here..is is safer than the coke and pepsi?? i doubt!

They would not do that but maintaining a certain standard is binding to them...why do they compromise on quality of their drinks in India?

just check these pictures !!!!
