good governance/ corruption
August 9, 2006 - 07:22 AM

Many African and world leaders have talked about eradicating corruption as if corruption occurs in a vaccum.

The presence of coruption signals a weak political will and a presence of unorganised leadership.

We have to resist corruption the same the same way we resist anti- democracratic governments and regimes.

Coruption is an age old tsunami that has existed in our world for so long.
Lets face the facts.. corruption is like cusmetics, it is you who puts in on it doesnt appear on its own. It is a symtom, indicating the presence of a disease, and of the malfunctioning of a system.

Therefore the same heads of states and government officials who sit and talk of eradicating corruption are thereselves, the strong holes and tap roots of corruption that has to be rooted out. Watch a man who is deligent in his ways he shall sit before kings. Let our leaders be deligent with finance and country buisness and we all shall sit like kings.

A 10th class student Ms. M. Bhavani studying in Adichunchanagiri Composite High School, Sharavathy Nagar, Shimoga asked me the following question in 2005.

"Dear Sir, What is the role of students to stop corruption which is deeply rooted in our county just like cancer?"

Agony of the young mind is reflected in this question. For me it was an important question, since it come from a young mind. I was thinking what type of solutions we could give. My thought process was the following:

I said there are one billion people in the country and nearly 200 million homes. In general there are good citizens everywhere. However, if we find that people in few million houses are not transparent and not amenable to the laws of the country, what can we do? These houses apart from parents have one daughter or one Son or both. If the parents in these houses are deviating from the transparent path the children can use the tool of love and affection and correct the parents to come back to the right path. I asked all the children assembled in that gathering, in case parents of few children get deviated from transparency, will you children boldly tell your parents, father or mother, you are not doing the right thing, that is what we are taught by you and in the school. Most of the children spontaneously responded, ?We will do it?. The confidence comes from them that they have love as a tool. Similarly I have also asked the parents in some other meeting, initially there was a silence, later, many of them hesitantly agreed that they would abide by the children?s suggestion since it is driven by love. They took an oath from me. The oath was ?I will lead an honest life free from all corruption and will set an example for others to adopt a transparent way of life?. Finally I told the students that they should start a movement starting from their home. Youth of today have to fight to eradicate corruption by making each home righteous.

So often, it is difficult for a President to kick out so many powerful politicians (albeit of less power than him) because they tend to be of the ruling party and have power! Kicking out all of the people who campaigned to get you elected in the 1st place is dangerous for the President himself (herself, occasionally). In Kenya, President Kenyatta has this problem.

In Kenya's case, they have got Saatchi and Saatchi, the advertising giants, to launch a 3-year campaign to make corruption be seen as sinful by the people.

If anyone is interested, Chad and Bangladesh are thought to be the world's most corrupt countries of 2005. Cameroon is pretty low down too. Transparency International is a great anti-corruption agency: http://ww1.transparency.org/cpi/2005/cpi2005.sources.en.html

To get ride of Corruption ....Lead by Example
August 10, 2006 - 06:48 AM

The excelency of government is proven and manifest in the ability of a leader to implement decisions and resolutions without the posible use of force. Neither democracy nor deplomacy have ensured this.

We need a new focus.. which to me is a model of leadership that leads by example and not by force or craftiness.
This is the model of leadership that can unite and harmonise. Leading the nations by example and not by dectating values which you yourselve have not assimiliated.

i appeal to the global comminity of youths to adopt this leadership paradigm of leading others by example. If u be the change u will soon see the change.

Taking lead to meet needs is what characterises good leadership.

To bring corrupt leaders to book we have to appeal to conscience. U can only pamper iron with oil. they all have a conscience just that no one has made them to realise it is still alive. They think leaders don`t reap what they sow. The reward to me is evident ...wars , famine, hate , prejudice etc

What we get back form society is what we ourselves have put in .. how corupt are u who wants to track down corrupt officials. there is no change in making statements. There is great change and gain when u be the change.

The old order shall change, so that we the new generation can have a chance to fulfil ourselves. But the change will be compromise when we follow the old and destructive model.......Stepehn N Asek.
