ant-war bad?
August 8, 2006 - 10:37 PM

i was just watching fox news the other day and they were talking about senator lamont being an anti-war person (this is in reference to the iraq war) and how that was such a bad thing and they went on to call him some bad names and other things. I was just amazed I mean considering the carnage the present U.S administartion has caused in Iraq and several top officials coming out and saying the war was a mistake it was very weird to see Mr Lamont being attacked by these far right war mongerers. I mean how does not wanting a war make you a bad person? so does that mean "peace" is not a good word in the minds of these people? Has the world come to a state that when someone wants peace they are told to go to hell. Anyways it was just interesting to me that the same people who call others terrorists are advocating for the same kind of violence that the word terrorist defines. I just want to know what people think of this

I'm not suprised to hear this. We live in a culture that considers voilence and war acceptable. To me anti-war is to be unpatriotic. I too am perplexed by the double standard of terrorism vs. war. The idea is that terrorism is so wrong because it's undeclared and targets innocents, war is just because it's a recognized method of conflict resolution and usually declared as such. Of course, bombs target innocents as much as terrorism does but no one wants to point that out.

I think there's a definite spin in the right-wing media in the US (Fox in particular leading that effort) to portray war as necessary and just in these difficult times.

It's very hard to know where to draw the line because we can't know what the world would have been like if the US had not invaded Iraq, for example. Maybe it would be better, maybe it would be worse - but throughout human history there has been bloodshed in the name of land, or religion or a myriad of other issues, and we are still killing each other today in the name of these issues despite knowing that years of violence have brought us to where we are today. I don't think that it's realistic to expect a sea change in human thinking because as long as poverty and disease exist, there will always be people desperate enough to kill others in the name of their beliefs. Sometimes it's the powerful who believe that they are above generally accepted morals and can do as they please... It's really sad to me that so much violent conflict is based on hatred and misunderstanding; if opposing groups could sit down together and engage in dialogue they would have the chance to see that they are very similar to each other.

Now clearly this is a very idealistic point of view, and although I believe that everyone should be "anti-war", things aren't that simple in this day and age. There are people who are truly convinced that violence is the only way to achieve their goals, regardless of the possibility of idealism in the general population. The question humankind has to deal with is how are we going to choose to react to these individuals and groups - are we going to use more violence and foster a neverending cycle, or are we going to try to break the cycle and better ourselves?
