[Poll] Best uses of the internet in rural areas
February 20, 2003 - 01:12 AM

There's a lot of projects that aim to bring internet access to the rural poor. However, many of these projects may be of questionable use to the people they purport to help.
- email access, but the people are mostly illiterate
- web access, but too slow to be practical
- e-learning, but no time to learn due to subsistence
- telephone access, but no one to call
I'd like to know what people think are the most successful applications of internet access (email, web, voice over ip, etc.) for the rural poor.

in my opinion, many things could be changed by the access to UNDERSTANDABLE AND USABLE information. so it is a question of the design and culturally adapted content that matters.
the "hole in the wall" shows how low level interaction with it can spread quickly ... also the simputer seems to be a useful utility, especially for illiterate people.
