ur nationality or your religion?
August 4, 2006 - 11:58 PM

I caught the last five minutes of the program on the BBC which was talking about which would u choose, ur nationality or your religion?sad
I really wanted to share in this program, I went to the phone and dialed the number announced in the prog. many times, I was very mad that it didn't work, I even thought of conspiracy theory, but later I remembered that I don't have the international code lol.

I was surprised why they chose such a topic, but after I looked around I guess it's mainly because the current war in Lebanon and the contradiction in it's community!!

It's very know that Lebanon is a country with a very numerous variety of ethnic, religion and even loyalty!! And still every one support hizpallah which is radical Shi'ies group.

It's very sense to ask this question NOW!!
Despite the current events in Lebanon, which would u choose, if u have to, ur nationality or your religion?

Asslamou Alaikoum
my religion is the only which distinguish between islam and other religions, nor distinguish between people colors, nations, nationalities
my religion treat all the same , ask us not to harm, and in wars defending on our selves , my religion ask us not to harm kids, women and old people
my religion taught us good ethicks and good treatment with all
my religion respect my humanity like others, my gender, my feeling
in brief I cant change my religion which taught me to be kind with all and to love all
I also can not immagine that I belong to other than my country Egypt which is African, mediterranian, Arab with roots of all the biggest civilizations
salam

How about created humans first and last. Then, we live with the best of all nationalities' up to date level of knowledge and religions' depth of civility. From such basis, we secure our personal and communal growth into the organic experience of spiritual unity. We can call the practice: "The Faculty of Living" and we can call such a State: "The mature people of all people". We then apply our self-governing into going from competing to completing one another's needs.
This view becomes then, the sought out mission of organisations from TIG to the UN, generating participation and collaboration of all the best we each have to offer to humanity.
Is that not what globalization is all about?

I think that asking whether one would choose between religion or country is a little more complicated than it may seem.

For me, the Bible says to obey the ruling authority in your respective country, as they have been put there by God. But then, God's law is above the law of man, so what happens when your country may go against what you believe yourself?

Of course, I love my country, and I feel blessed to live in Australia. Do I put more importance, in my own life, on my religion than my country? Yes, I do. But this doesn't mean that I am going against my country. For me, living in Australia, it is hard to imagine when I would have to choose explicitly between my country and my religion. however, if i lived in anoher country, and for example practising my religion was illegal, i would have no trouble in defying that law, and practicing my religion. At least, I hope i could do that.

But then again, I'm not in that situation. Would I ever incite violence against my country? No. Do I disagree with some thigns that the Australian government, for example, do, whcich may go against what i believe to be true? Possibly. this desn't mean i'm choosing between my religion and country though.

Hello,

Could you direct me to the verse or verses in the Bible that say that governments are put in place by God?

Thanks,

Lucia

I would say reason should come before either one of them !
Blind and illogical support for either one of them might have drastic consequences!!!

of course the way we perceive things might be defined by our religion and the philosophy we follow, yet i believe that religion is for us and not we for religion and hence there is no need to protect 'religion '!
As for nationalities, if we respect each other there wouldnt be a need to defend our countries.

Our aim should be to respect life irrespective of the nationality or religion !!!

Peace,
Anu

Unfortunately, reason can be deeply plaqued by what you belief is true. 'Truth' is heavily dependent on your spiritual or religious beliefs and also on where you are brought up...

yes I agree to that.
As i said earlier, the way we perceive things might be defined by our religion or the philosophy we grew up with.
Yet religion/beliefs is not somthing that is permanently etched on our minds without any possible revisions.
I believe that every individual is capable of change !
we all are capable of seeing 'reason' if permitted or if the circumstances are conducive...and sometimes our reasoning might lead us to rise above the feelings of 'nationality' and man-made religion to think of LIFE itself .

there is much more to our identities..than Nationality...or Religion. Any of these two cannot define us completely. So Why even get into this debate? This debate , often , divides people.

If your religion is the only identity you have, then you run the risk of getting segregated within your own country. So, within your own country, probably Nationality could be the binding factor.

However in India, often, Nationality is considered similar to following the majority. And this majority is often of people following Hinduism. Hence, a biiterness creeps in among people on the basis of religion.

If the majority shows hatred towards people from other religions, then do the minority really have a choice?

If nationality is about sense of belonging to the country, then probably thats our binding factor. Religion is the personal choice and i do not think people should be asked to choose between a country and religion. people have right to belong to both.

so, is religion supposed to be logical? is the concept of god logical?

hmmm i didnt imply that ...
what i meant was that the one shouldnt lend her/his blind support to any 'religion' or anything for that matter...

the concept of 'God' is based on faith not logic as far as i see it , it is something that caters to our emotional well being . But of course one need not follow a particular religion to get that. One can be spiritual without conforming to a particular religion and instead learning and imbibing the best of every religion...

cheers,
Anu

i would choose nationality, due to the fact that i do not believe in religion at all.

but i would put my values and morals ahead of my nation. So if my values and morals were my religion, religion would come first. If that makes sense.

nationalism is a relatively recent thing for people.. so the religion passed down thru families/societies would probably be a greater influence on the religious-type people. Couple that to the fact that my nations laws and such were firstly based on religion as with most places..

did the tv program have any examples of what would make people choose between the two?

I am in the simliar situation with the previous post, in that I would choose my nationality over religion because, although I attend a catholic school, I don't have a religion.

But that isn't to say that I would consider Australia the best nation or anything, I love Oz but I wouldn't die proclaiming my nations name. I always think putting yourself in the context of your nationality helps form your identity, but I do not think that it makes a person.

Great question.
