Prejudice. When and where did it start for you?

Can anyone remember when prejudice first stepped into their lives?
Is it just me, or does no one else remember the religion/colour/race/culture of their friends when they were really little?
Is it just me that wonders when and where did I pick up the habit to make assumptions about people, or class them on what they are?

making assumptions about others and the situations is human. but whats unhelpful is ..forming conclusions on the basis of your assumptions..without looking at all the evidence.
our prejudice/assumptions come from our personal experiences. and also from our social learnings when we are growing up.
as we grow..we need to learn to challenge the unhelpful social learnings..which we at times are not able to..due to our personal experiences. so that means that is people around me told that hindus cannot be trusted..and then my experiencs with some hindus were unhappy and discriminatory..then my social learning got consolidated further with my personal experiences. then i might keep on assuming that every hindu that i meet cannot be trusted. i might even overlook the nice hindus that i might meet in life.
but if i havte wotk with my prejudice..then i will really have to challenge them!

good question. however, it's soo difficult to pinpoint such a complex point in our lives. i was always making assumptions of white americans as being the privileged rich people in america. many of my assumptions have proven true. historically, white americans have had the upper hand in america.

I agree with Shweta..!
More about it from Wikipedia...
"Prejudice is, as the name implies, the process of "pre-judging" something. It implies coming to a judgment on a subject before learning where the preponderance of evidence actually lies, or forming a judgment without direct experience. Holding a politically unpopular view is not in itself prejudice, and politically popular views are not necessarily free of prejudice. When applied to social groups, prejudice generally refers to existing biases toward the members of such groups, often based on social stereotypes; and at its most extreme, results in groups being denied benefits and rights unjustly or, conversely, unfairly showing unwarranted favor towards others..
.."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prejudice
Basically prejudice might originate, amon other things, from ignorance, arrogance, too much of self-confidence, hasty conclusions, wrong/faulty/incomplete assuptions, lack of direct contact, lack of experience...

It is difficult to remember, but you begin to feel prejudice against a lot of people and you don't even know when did that happen. Working to get all those rotting feelings from your system is hard but then you begin to realize that everybody has a face, a body, a culture, a story and that no one can tell that what you think is more valid than what others think. For example, if nobody has returned from death, how can you tell what's there after you die? Is there Paradise, is there Hell, isn't there any of those options? If no one has the last word in the discussion, then everybody can be right. That's when prejudice begins to fall.
