Project for Orphange/School in Tanzania
July 27, 2006 - 02:01 PM

Hello Friends!
I am fourteen and I live in Canada, BC. I recently went to a talk by Craig Kielburger on his organization "Free the Children" and was inspired to start a group. Some friends of mine had lived in Tanzania for a number of years and knew a farmer there that they were always fundraising for because he had taken many AIDS orphans into his house. He is really caring but does not have the facilities or the equipment to run an orphange. Me and a group of friends are trying to setup somthing with "Free the Children" and the Bahai NSA of Tanzania to build a school/orphange for the AIDS orphans. We were also hoping to travel to Tanzania in summer 2007. First we need to fundraise, does anyone have ideas for the project or fundraising? (We are estimating $7000-$10000 for the entire project + more for upkeep)

Dear tlander121,
This is great of you and of your friends. Here are some letters for you to check, about people who work in Tanzania as well as much of Africa. They might have some ideas for you.

Do not be shy. If I think of something for fundraising, I'll write again. What is the name of your group and how do we join?

...all blessings be with us all...

No expert on fundraising. Are you 14 years old? I wish I had the confidence to do something like yourself when I was that age. You'll go far and do great things if you continue just as you are :-)

I don't know how you can really join yet because we are just starting and I still need to contact Free the Children and see if they are interested in helping (I havent got the movtivation yet to do it, my friend just got mentally sick and I can't get over it, because it all started with an obession with this website)

Well I have been busy this past week and havent raise much more than $20, two weeks ago I raised like $300 - $400 but thats all I have except for people giving me pop bottles and stuff which I haven't counted yet. I am actually in the middle of running a childrens program and we raised $50 today and we are expecting more tomorrow. They haven't decided where the money is going yet though. Well I keep everyone updated! I have to go.smile

Thank you for your comments, I'll definately keep you updated.

So we filled our van up with pop bottles and raised $110. We still have more bottles to take in too. I'm going to do some garden work for a friend on wednesday with a couple of my other friends and she's going to give us $100+. I know I shouldn't be counting before I have the money but it hard not to do. I recently heard a rumor from a my school secretary (and this hasn't been confirmed) that we are planning to make this and all school project as well as using Craig Kielburger's book Me to We an all school read book. I hope that this works out and it will be interesting to see the two schools linked. Thanks again for the support!

EDIT: We have just hit over $800 five minutes ago! I received a letter from Jason (the man in Tanzania) and he is so kind, its amazing how hospitable people are in other countries. He already has a plan and has drawn a small picture of it. I will try to scan the letter and post it.

OK here are the attachments to the three letters.

So we are at around $1500, not much has happened lately though the group is hoping to get involved with a local interact rotary club. We are planning events but I need major fundraising ideas. Anyone got any?

I will have to double post again because there is a letter I wanted to post.

Here is a letter I wrote up:
A local poor family in a village in Malampaka, Tanzania, Africa started OCES. They keep and care for orphans at their home; they feed them and provide support for their education. Many of the orphan's relatives have died because of the AIDS disease, leaving them with no one to care for them.
The area is very dry and does not experience enough seasonal rain. The result, most people are very poor and spend most of their minute income on food.
Currently about 200 children or 10% of the population of children in Malampaka are orphans as a result of there parents dying from HIV/AIDS. These children are left with no choice but to live on the streets, stealing and doing all sorts of mischievous acts. They have become not only a nuisance but also a burden on the community. Some of the girls have become house girls with no pay and others are forced to marry early. The worst possible situation is that they are forced to marry a man who is HIV positive.
OCES focuses on giving access to necessities such as medical care, clothing, food; giving education to the orphans and poor children, especially girls; educating the community on HIV/AIDS and the rapid increase of orphans.
There are currently several families residing in the lower Vancouver Island region collecting saving money (via collecting pop bottles, gardening, etc.) to raise money for this beneficial project. Our goal is to raise $10,000 and travel to Tanzania in summer 2007 to assist in the building of a school for the orphans. So what can you do to help? You can forward this email to your friends and family and ask them to get involved. Donate your extra change or collect pop bottles. We are currently in need of playing materials, teaching materials, cooking utensils, furniture and fencing. If you wish to help, have fundraising ideas or would like more information please contact me at tlander121@hotmail.com or phone us at 1-250-412-8182.
Thank you for all your support,
Teague Lander

Hey there!

Just wanted to let u know ur doing a great job!

Your a real Blessing! angelic

here r a few ideas for fundraising that u and ur friends can do:

1. Selling homemade, decorative, scented candles - If priced at the right rate your'l will definitely earn a good profit...a lesser quantity of candles can be distributed among ur friends...so that ur sale can increase if its spread out.

but dont forget to tell 'em about ur cause.

2. Drawings or raffles - u could find out if anyone is ready to sponsor a small gift, gift certificate or basket of goodies...n can start a raffle for the gift within ur school...reasonable price of course. then when all ur raffle tickets r sold out, have a lucky draw n give the prize smile

Could get sponsors for a gift from the nearest bakery like a basket of baked cakes n stuff, shopping store, toy store or any person within ur locality who is generous enough smile

3. Bake sales, garage sales

4. Selling books that u've read.

5. Silent Auctions - Get some donated gifts new or used from individuals, businesses letting them know ur fundraising. have a silent auction, have people bid on the item and the highest bid gets the item. Promote the event thru flyers, newsletters. ad's on the local paper, a notice on ur school notice board.

I hope my suggestions r of some help to ur group...will love to hear about the achievements u've made so far with ur project.

Wishing u all the best! and keep up the good work...ur a real Blessing!! and ur only 14! smile

If there's anything i can do to help...just let me know. All the best! take care.

God Bless,
Vanessa.

Thank you Vanessa, I've considered using these ideas. They are very helpful.

Sorry I haven't updated in a while...
We had a bottle drive last weekend and we are estimating that we have more than $2000 dollars are together. My friend is writing to the airlines, to see if we can get free tickets. Another friend of mine is currently in Tanzania, volunteering and having a blast. She has not been able to visit the site that we were planning to build the school on. As of now it looks like the location will change.

Thank you all again for your support.

Teague

Thats what we live for...to offer others a living!

Let there be a contact person in Tanzania to whom we can send funds to, cos i will be making my own donations in person from now till the project kicks off, but it will be more easier for us here to send money to Tanzania, so figure that out.

Also i volunteering to be part of the project, i will register my presence in person at Tanzania.

Keep me posted, you can talk to me on talk2femivim@yahoo.com I will as well make provisons for free drugs for those orphans.

This is what i advocate in all the forums , that we can not all sit on our computers and talk till eternity, we must ACT!
