Aids and its impact on indian economy

A research by the National Council of Applied Economic Research in collaboration with the UN Development program and the Government of India's National Control Organization has revealed that The AIDS epidemic in India would affect India's economy severely over the next decade if stringent measures are not taken to control its
spread.
The study, considered to be the largest study of AIDS in India until now, concluded that the current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth
rate could fall by one percentage point over a decade if nothing was
done to curb the spread of AIDS.
The leading Delhi based economic research group estimated that the
GDP of 2002-03 would fall by $237 billion in 2015-16, if the
government failed to stem this epidemic. On the contrary, the study
also stated that, "it is possible to argue that in the next decade
the annual GDP growth rate can be increased by up to one percent if
AIDS is effectively countered."
The study was based on a sample of 2,068 HIV households, including
2,385 people affected by HIV and AIDS, and 6,223 non-HIV households,
collected from six states across the country that are known to have
some of the highest cases of HIV.

hey,
i'm siddharth from chennai. recently, i attended this aids awareness pgm by some american graduates in my college.
i think it was a wonderful xperience. the way they made the ppl understand was really awesome. it was not like a monotonous session of lecture. it was more like an interactive session with games so that u get to understand the disease better and also how to go abt preventin it. i think v as indians should do something abt it as ppl from other nations r willing to help us. they came all the way from usa to make us aware of the disease. dont u think v shud also act quickly and make ppl(especially those of the rural areas) aware of this?

A friend of mine, a student in immunology, went to India for about 6 months to help raise awareness about HIV and AIDS. One obstacle she said she faced was in terms of cultural assumptions. Her group needed extensive training in order to communicate effectively with locals. But yes, if the training is done well, these programs are a great way to educate the public, esp if there is no local or governmental program in place!

Hi siddharth, I appriciate your concern for this, you know there are number of projects and programmes on HIV awareness in india which are mainly focussing on rural areas....since the treands of this pendamic are showing that it is spreading now from High risk behaviour groups to general population and from urban areas to rural areas.

Recently a programme was conducted to test and raise awareness levels of India's parliamentary members about HIV.
It threw up stratling suprises with some members of the view that AIDs spread with touch ,sharing of food and clothes with an infected person. Too much !! This when India is sitting on a Aids epidemic bomb waiting to explode.India needs collective research and funding to discover AIDS vaccine suitable for Asians.
