Wow! So many people like READING!!!! Guess it's a rare thing to see nowadays.
Firstly, I should say that I nearly admire homme-blanc, Emma-le-Femma, Joney and other people who read and thought over Noam Chomsky's and Gearge Lakoff's books (being a linguist myself).
And, secondly, I decided to write a list of books that came to my mind immediately after I started to think over the question of the thread author (further thinking showed that the list should be longer-longer-longer...)
The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
An American Tragedy - Theodore Dreiser
Vanity Fair - William M. Thackeray
The works by Nikolai Leskov
Tove Jansson's tales
"Mirgorod" - Nikolai Gogol (it's a collection of short stories)
The Collector - John Fowles
Early novels by Haruki Murakami
Down and Out in Paris and London - George Orwell (though I like his Animal Farm, 1984 and essays as well)
Up the Down Staircase - Bel Kaufman (it's for those who have to teach without any experience like I'm now)
etc. etc. etc.
Well, I think that there are books for every time of life. Mine NOW are these, but who knows what was earlier and what will come soon?!
Best regards to book-lovers!!!!

One amazing book which will not only make you think, but will give you the ability to understand: "Church of God? or the Temples of Satan" by R. A. Anderson.

Two books that have made me think (and somewhat act):
Guns, Germs and Steel
Wikinomics (which actually introduced me to TakingITGlobal in the first place)

I have no such more time to read extra books out of my course books But i read any extra book which is too much knowlegeable actionable and creative.
My experience say that the books which we read out of our course books,we understand it soon and act fastly on theknowledge of that book

I read A Long Way Gone, memoirs of a boy soldier by Ishmael Beah recently. Usually, I don't much read non-fiction book or memoirs. But after reading Beah's story I was moved and it helped solidify my belief that I want to work with child soldiers and refugees when I grow up.
Other than that, I read Harry Potter but I'm inclined to ask, 'who doesn't, these days?' I'm about halfway through the book and, as I am older and more mature now, I can see so many references in the books.
There are a lot of other ones that I could talk about but I doubt anyone will want to read such a long post.

My recent reading includes the Percy Jackson Children's series( all 3 books ) ....it is really interesting ....a complete revision of Greek Mythology in the most exciting way possible ....
It is sort of an American Harry potter.....If one can ignore the whole "Hail America and the western civilation " stuff then ...it is an interesting read

Hmm
Books that made me think:
The Lost World by Michael Chrichton( I read this when I was 14)
The Quran
Sufi: Expressions of the Mystic's Quest by Laleh Bakhtiar,
Listening Now by Anjana Appachana,
and many more,
Books that made me act:
there are so few of them, I can think of some of Michael Chrichton's books because they're about saving the world, like State of Fear, Prey...
But gosh, this list os small.

I love dystopic fiction! It makes me think (mostly socially) while I´m enjoying myself with some great books.
I think that 1984 (ninteeneightyfour) is definitely one best books ever written!
brave new world (A. Huxley)
A handmaid´s tale
oryx and crake (both by M. Atwood)
Utopia (T. Moore)
The new Atlantis (F. Bacon)
currently I´m reading "Atlas shrugged" which makes me think a lot because I do not like the characters at all, AT ALL. I do not support Ayn Rand's ideas, even though I think its really well written.
Next book on my reading list: Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
And I desperately want too read some Vonnegut!!
If I can think of more books I´ll post again. *

oh well im an avid reader!!!!let's see , I simply loved Betty Mahmoody's not without my daughter , u know , to act courageous and never give up in the midst of all difficulties. I supposed Gerda Weismann's all but my life also fall in to the same category.
I also loved all an unquiet mind, it gave more of an insight to manic depressive illness!! Yes it involved a lot of thinking , and they way of curing it or over coming it was rather a rough path.
