great thread....
i love arundahti roy, although i haven't read the god of small things i've read some of her essays and non-fiction.
howard zinn's a people's history of the united states is a must-read if you live in the u.s.. especially if you're taking a u.s. history course, it's a good alternate view of history.
right now i'm reading "stop the next war" which is a collection of anti-war writings collected by an organization called code pink. i'm also reading "voices of peace", which is the same type of thing. i'm in the middle "abortion wars: a half century of struggle" which is a great read if you're interested in the abortion battle. oh and i 'm reading "stiff : the curious lives of human cadavers" by mary roach.
i just finished "the best thing i ever tasted", which is a really interesting book about food - i reccomend it. also, russel bank's "the darling" is a great fiction book.
other good ones (not neccesarily political or anything)are:
-the poisonwood bible by barbara kingsolver
-skinny legs & all by tom robbins
-still life with woodpecker - tom robbins
- on the road
-the postman always rings twice - james m.cain
-anything by f.scott fitzgerald
..... wow that was long. well, i love to read!

My recent favourite is "Race Against Time", the Massey Lectures by Stephen Lewis who is the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to HIV/AIDS in Africa. The lectures start with the line, "For the last four years of my life, I've been watching people die." It's such a powerful, intelligent, bold, no bullshit statement on the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Another favourite book of mine is Augusto Boal's Games for Actors and Non-Actors. This book is filled with drama activities that can be used to educate, motivate, and inspire change in a group of people. It is all about using aspects of drama and theatre for social change. Check it out!

I'll only write 2 books, although I enjoy very much reading, these 2 are my preferred one, and I can call them "favourites":
1. The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupery (it's such a nice book, and it really points out the most important things in life, it's a great book for children and for adults too, you should never forget that your soul should remain a kid forever)
2. The catcher in the rye - J.D.Salinger (it's about the typical problems of adolescency, the questions an adolescent asks himself, the connections he makes, and the way he generally thinks, a really nice book)

Dandelion WIne by Ray Bradbury is interesting because he changes the narrator and point of view in different parts of the book. That made me think about my own writing and if could perhaps pull that off sometime.

I Will Betray My Home Land>>Mohammad Al Maghout
And these days I'm busy reading a novel by the Turkish wrtier who won a Nobel lately, he's amazing and you guys should really read it, he has a style that I never read or heard of before, his name is Orhan Palmok, and the novel I'm reading is called "My Name is Red".

Well, when I am not reading books of philosophy because it is not academic, I go for crime, thrillers and romance; sometimes Sci Fi. I like and have read the 007 series, Keyhole Crime series et al. I have also read detective shots like Chase's and Edgar Wallace, especialy Big Foot and Poison.
