Re: Books that make you think... or act!

I am trying to become my own version of wikipedia. I have read several books on almost everything. My current read is Wikinmomics: How Mass Collaboration changes everything.
This is a very good read for anyone who aspires to do anything business related. I personally never thought I would be interested in business; particularly during my artsy phase and socialist phase. However, if you plan on getting paid anytime in your life, busines sis important. This book will let you know what to expect and how you can be most effective during changing times.
I would also agree than NO Logo by Klein is a good starting point for anyone concerned with global issues. Noam Chomsky is decent too, although sometimes I think he's just whining.
Bounce it back,
gk

I'm in Love with Motivatinal/inspirational books filled with quotes and instances.
Biographies and Auto-biographies are not left behind in my list.Aswell as science fictions...
They possess the capability of equiping someone into doing things others said can't be done.Making the impossibility to be nothing;and giving us chances of right mental attitudes in overcoming the world most dangerous epidemic : "hardening of attitude".
The list of them all [my favourite books], is unlimited...

I just read this book called "Notes from Canada's Young Activists: A Generation Stands Up for Change" and it was really motivational. I is a collection of stories from some of the most prominent youth activists in Canada like Craig Kielburger and Ilana Doulghty (not sure I've got her name right).
Its really really good, but tough to find.

I love Charles De Lint, he's an inspiration to how view the world.
Also, "the philosophy of sex" is very insightful
"the five people you meet in heaven" is worth a read for a different (and optimistic) take on life.

I'm surprised no one mentionned Animal Farm! It's a quick read and offers great insight into communism.
SOPHIE'S WORLD, though, is by far my favourite read. It's a philosophy book (used in some intro to philo classes in uni) explained through a fictional story. It completely changed the way I think and view people/situations/myself... everything!

I LOVE motivational or Inspirational books. Those are the books you will find in my bag or hand as I went everywhere. I gave me a chance to maintain the positiveness and hopes to kept going inside me no matter what eternal situation may say.
Those books are:
- All edition and series of Chicken Soup
It's a totally GREAT book. I find myself moved and inspired to do things after reading it.
- Purpose driven life
This book made me realize why GOD put me in this world. It placed me in the position of God's eternal partner.
- Diary of Anne Frank
Having passed a conflict time myself in my hometown. I came to understand how treamendously great this little girl to maintain positive thinking and keep on hoping.
- Reason for Hope (Dr. Jane Goodall)
She's like one of my hero. It taught me that you need not be a celebrity to start impacting the world
The Purpose Driven Life, People Peace Building, Diary of Anne Frank, Rebekah, Lima Sekawan, Acts of Kindness, Laki-laki sperti Wafer, Perempuan seperti Bakmi, Chicken Soup, Trilogi Dave Pelzer, Totochan, Reason for Hope, Men are from Mars Women are from Venus, Resep masakan, Novels, Biography, Voice of the Voiceless

Because of my love of literature, I have shaped my life in the light of literature and furthermore I chose studying literature (english literature) at the university as my profession. I would like to share some of my favourite books' names.
"Small Island" by Andrea Levy
"Fruit of the Lemon" by Andrea Levy
"The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco
"1984" by George Orwell
Also I would like to take your suggestions.

Basically, when we talk about books one needs to understand some basic things which includes:
1. The mind has a direct link with our thought and our thought is as function of what we fill our minds with just like the computer, what you input is what you get as output.Books have a lot of influence on mind and as such we need to be very careful the books we read, be it literature or religious stuff.
2. Books are good for the brain as scientist have proven that those whoo do not read have their brain decomposes over time. Mark Twain said, "Those who do not read are not different from those who did not go to school"
3. Information is a fundamental key in the school of success. Whatever it is you want to achieve in life is tied to some information you need access to , just like some white man said, if you want to hide wisdom from a black man, put it in a book.He will never read it" The nations of African is backward majorly because of this.
Read,Study and you would be suprised at yourself in the next couple of years.
Presently, I am reading , The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman. A book analyzing the analyzing the progress of globalization with an emphasis on the early 21st century.

although it has nothing to do with activism, really, it will make you think (and maybe act)
the glass castle by jeannette walls
walls is a west virginian (american) author who had an interesting childhood, which she chronicles in castle.
her next project is a biography of her mother, which should be equally satisfying.

I love reading, so, so, so much.
Gabriel Garcia-Marquez is godly. Other than that, I think Douglas Coupland's Generation X gives a great depiction of that generation and I loved it to death.
Has anyone here read Siddhartha by Herman Hesse? Really, really made me think. It's a very slow read though. Worth it.
