Books that make you think... or act!

I love reading...
Usually Im not much of a non-fiction reader. I prefer to escape into a created reality. But that is not to say I like to read fluffy no-substance books.
I really like books that give me an insight into another context.
I am interested in books you all recommend, both fiction and non-fiction with good insights.
some of my faves are:
No Logo - Naiomi Klein
The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy
Stupid White Men - Michael Moore
Adbusters - (OK, its a magazine, but it's damn good!)
Um..... What about you???

I am so glad that I found someone in the post that is as interested in book as I am.
I am really into various non-fiction and fiction book:
Currently I am reading a Million Little Pieces. I have read many of the criticism that has taken over this author and the book.
1) The Devil Wears Prara: I love tihs book it really is insightful and very comiicak.
I hope that there are others out there that are intereted in literature Ias I am. I am always interested in discovering what others have read and what they recommend. Drop me a line and I will get back to you y'all .

I'm not exactly a fan of reading. I read about four novels a year. I like religious texts becuase I'm really into religious things, children's books becuase they're really creative. The best books I've ever read were,
The Happy Potter series
Angels and Demons
The DaVinci Code

Naomi Klein's book is very accessible, I think this is a great introductory book esp for younger people.
I think I read too much to try to list all the books that have affected me. "The Factory Ship" by Takiji Kobayashi (short story) is the latest psuedo political thing I've read. Really brutal text about migrant Japanese workers.

I Just finished reading the second part of the "autobiography" a million little pieces, that's called "My Friend leonard". This one is alot less intense than its first part, however, it did not totally lose the charm. I greatly recommand reading them both.
I've also recently finished Mitch Albom's "Five people you meet in Heaven". After a slow start it actually turned out to be quite an intersting little novel.

Beatrice Culleton's In search of April Raintree is one of my favourite books. It is based on the author's own life experience and a written in a way that nobody can put it down till they are through...
after this the list is really long ...but i will ... actually 'can' mention only a few
1. Irving Stone's Love is Eternal ( Ab Lincoln's biography)
2. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera
3.Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale
4. Michel Foucault 's The History of Sexuality
5. New French Feminisms: An Anthology by Elaine Marks, Isabelle De Courtivron
thats all for now !!
Cheers !

The Foucault one is good! A good intro text from History of Sexuality would be "Right of Death and Power Over Life."
As far as magazines go, I've read good articles from The Walrus

"Serendipities" of Umberto Eco ... Very interesting discussion about "perfect" languages with insightful historic analysis..
From pure fiction stuff, being a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy i would recommend many but here I will put just one, the most original one
"The Cycle of Fire" - Janny Wurts .. a fantasy sci-fi

So many books have changed the way I thought about certain things, or made me question something and go out and learn more about it. That's what is so brilliant about books, like TIG, they can inspire, inform, involve!
Some of the most important books I've read and would recommend...
- Afghanistan: Where God Only Comes to Weep by Siba Shakib
- Animal Liberation by Peter Singer
- Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
- The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac
- The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

Man, I love reading, I can read ANYTHING. Literally - anything, magazines, fiction, non-fiction, manuals, Inspirational, religious, feel good...the list goes on.
Some of the books that made me think/act were:
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
Speaker for the Dead - Orson Scott Card
Xenocide - Orson Scott Card
Elsewhere - Not sure
The Bible - Not Sure
The Book of Mormon - Not Sure
The Websters English Dictionary
Robert Jordan Books
Daughter of the Blood/Heir to the Shadows/Queen of Darkness - Anne Fine
The Satanic Bible - Unsure
Philosophy for Begginers - Not Sure
Your Guide to the Casio FX100 - Casio
The Babes Bible - Not Sure
And too many more to list...
Of course, I didn't put my 'favourite' books in, just the ones that made me think.
