What do you guys think is one of the greatest rivalries between teams in the World Cup?
I dont really know much about rivalries, I've been alive only so that I can be a fan of 2 world cups. But one of the greatest games I saw was Brazil vs Italy in USA1994.

hmm Argentina Vs England comes to my mind immediately !
in the last world cup there was so much drama when Beckham scored that one goal in penalty shoot out to put Argentina out of the world cup and to take sweet revenge for being sent out in the previous world cup ....
and the falkland war also added a political air to the rivalry ...last time the media had a ball reporting the whole drama !
check out the details on wiki ;

Yeah, England-Argentina ranks high, as does England-Germany, both for politics slipping into football.
Then Argentina-Brazil, Italy-Brazil, Italy-Germany, which are luckily all for more football-related reasons I guess there are also many others between smaller teams, like Greece VS Turkey, but probably it's because the these teams like the Brits have less of a glorious world cup history and rivalrys are built through classics in key games, if you don't play much of these it's hard to build the rivalry beyond political/historical reasons.

There is an excellent rivalry between Italy and Argentina.
I remember the 1990 World Cup semifinal when Italy looked like they would defeat Argentina leading through most of the game. Claudio Cannigia equalised late in the game and Italy lost on penanlty kicks..
What a sad way to lose at home!!!
I agree that the England-Argentian rivalry is more intense. The English will never ever forget the "Hand of God" goal.

the greatest rivalry in football is by far between brazil and argentina, just think about the whole Pele and Maradonna player of the century award by FIFA and the whole debate that ensued.
also there have been so many memorial matches between these two and also u can never tell who's gonna win when the two of them meet up and off course they are found on the same continent, in the same football zone and they play alot against each other which even adds to my point.
THE BEST RIVALRY BY FAR IS BRAZIL VS ARGENTINA, I JUST HOPE THEY MEET UP THIS WORLD CUP.

Greatest rivalries in football games have political drawbacks.
A war once broke out between El Salvador and Honduras -apparently-because of a football game.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_War
Germany Vs the Netherlands games -recall Euro 1992 and Euro 2004- are typical rivalry games. Remember also the famous Iran Vs USA game in France 1998, as well as the famous East Germany Vs West Germany game in the world cup 1974 ! Moreover, the recent Germany Vs Poland game looked like a typical rivalry game between two neighbor countries
Other impprtant examples: Peru Vs Ecuador, Algeria Vs Morocco, Iraq Vs Iran, Turkey Vs Greece, Iraq Vs Kuwait, Serbia Vs Albania, Slovenia Vs Croatia, as well as other countless examples.
