Hype?

Here in canada, I'm sad to say, there wasnt that much hype about the world cup, not even for the opening day.
During the last world cup I was in Venezuela, and even with the time difference the entire country was pumped up! Everyone had a shirt, or a flag, or a sticker or something that showcased their allegiance. The games were at 1am, 3am and 7am and it was still a big event. During the final, the entire country spent the night awake waiting for the final game (k ya I'm exaggarating but it felt like it).It was unbelivable!
Here in canada though, there isnt that much of anything. I've only seen 2 soccer commercials, and not that many people wear the colors of any teams.
How was it in your country?

I find that there is a lot of excitement in the soccer communities, especially in the Lower Mainland in BC. But part of the reason that there is not much hype about the World Cup in Canada is because Canada has not qualified for a World Cup competition since 1986.

In Australia, typically a country where football (i still call it soccer :P) hasn't got much attention, everyone is going crazy. Yes, it may be because it is the first time we have qualified since the 70's, and that we are being coached by Guus Hiddink, but there is quite a lot of hype around it all!

I know my Trinidadians in Canada are quite happy to see their small island in the World Cup -- and that is basically how it is in Canada, the different ethnic groups and cultures in Canada will always go crazy for their country of origin.
Trinidad & Tobago is playing Sweden at the moment, so I have to go.

in my country i dont see much hype but in select few homes or places .
within Mumbai i think I am one of the people super charged with world cup excitement !!!
India is more of a cricket lover country .
people go crazy at cricket matches..
if i say it loud in Mumbai that i dont like to watch cricket they will practically lynch me
there are lot of commercials though . even crickets stars are sporting football gear to sell things !

Well in Armenia, as i was there recently, it seems people get quite high from the idea of watching and betting especially.
Armenian football team called Ararat was a champion of Soviet Union in 1973 and ever since Armenians cherish the hope of the "resurrection"!
In general football is very popular over there; many young people play it professional or on amateur level! Certain pubs install big screens especiall for that reason. It is a normal practice in Europe but in coutries such as Armenia it is not a norm!
In Switzerland where i study currently football is also taken quite seriously, especially after recent "successes" of Swiss national team
Anyhow, not only big screens but also concerts, ads, shows, etc are organized!
H.

India has a lot of potential to qualify for the world cup but there is lot corruption in the sports field ...
the cricket board gets all the funding. I feel that all the money gets to the cricket board only...rest of the sports departments literally starves for attention
besides there is no professionalism in the field .
there is harldy any incentive for potential players to take football professionally.

In London you can barely move without seeing a George Cross. I quite enjoy the feeling of unity across the country. I'm not so keen on the hooliganism.

...you apparently defeated your reason to comment about this special time because of the absence remark you have made in the beginning.
In fact, I was doing a gig near where you worked and there was pride for the game that time. Jerseys, face paint, Heineken. That's pride! They even showed the games at the place I did work for during work.
