The [b]FIFA World Cup 2006 is going to hosted in a country that's football crazy. On July 6th 2000 Germany won the bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2006 ahead of South Africa and England. It will be Germany’s second time to host the FIFA World Cup after 1974. All over Germany preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2006 are in full swing. New stadia are being built, others are given a 21st century makeover. Matches will be held in 12 different stadiums, with the opening ceremony and first match in Munich on June 9th 2006 the final being held on July 9th 2006 in Berlin. Five of 64 FIFA World Cup games - one quarter final and four preliminary round matches - will take place in Hamburg. The Hanseatic city is more than only a venue for this spectacular event. It is a host for football friends from all over the world - true to the official motto: "A Time to Make Friends"
The countdown is over and the FIFA World Cup™ opens today in Munich. Precisely 1,441 days after Cafu held aloft the Cup in Yokohama, Germany and Costa Rica will battle it out in the Opening Match (kick-off 18:00 CET).
In total there will be 64 games in 31 days, concluding with Final in Berlin on 9 July.
