I do think unemployment causes poverty (since there is no income, right? and its also an indicator of the level of education and human capital). At the same time, employment doesn't necessarily eliminate it ! Simply it changes the "poor" to the "working poor".

Umemployment is not only about money, it is about the mental state of which is that of idleness...

Being employed not only brings material(money) benefit but also a spiritual one(you do smth that is useful for someone however little it is remunerated)..

Unemployment is linked with both the cause of poverty and the consequences of poverty. If one does't have an income, then naturally, poverty will (depending on circumstances) follow, eventually.

But it is also part of the unbreakable cycle of poverty. Take the case of Africa (i realise this is a huge generisation, but I am just trying to outline something). A person who lives in poverty will often have fewer, if any, chances to find a job, let alone a secure job. They are then thrown into the vils of unemployment. As they are unemployed, they cannot gain jobs, and in most cases, social security and welfare systems do not exist.

It is part of the cycle, but just because someone is employed, does not mean they can lift themselves out of the poverty trap. It is only one of many factors, yet one which can have huge consequences.

Despite the "unparalleled economic growth" we're experiencing, the rich have become richer and the poor even poorer. Creation of productive and secure jobs with adequate income and reasonable work conditions will help an economy undergo from low productivity traditional agriculture to labor intense high value agricultural and industrial sector. This can help eliminate widespread unemployment that causes threat to social, economic and political stability. Therefore, unemployment (one of many) does cause poverty and should never be overlooked. I believe that decent employment is one of the major routes out of poverty.

Definitely, unemployement cause poverty. Both money and mental poverty. Idle person became mentally illed. Empty mind is devils home. .. One of the main cause of population increase is also unemployment. Are you agree with me????

Youthforchange, I ask this with all due respect, but what dissenting opinion do you really expect to elicit with that topic? The first response - "well it sure doesn't create wealth" - is about as apt as you can get. Am I perhaps not reading your question correctly? Are you asking, is unemployment THE cause of poverty? Or perhaps, is having any unemployment in an economic system an impediment to expansion which inevitably causes poverty? Not sure; because as your question stands, how can anyone say "No"?

I think unemployment is a cog to the wheel of progress and development of any country,Can we at this point begin to suggest solutions which will help curb the plight of this cankerworm in our immediate societies and the world at large?

You are not understanding my question. Unemployment is only one of the factors. This is just basically a discussion of how unemployment contributes to Poverty and Homelessness.

Poverty is the "lack of resources/income/wealath" or it is the "Lack of Oppurtunities" it is also a "deprivation".
And the similarly the UNEMPLOYMENT is also a "deprivation" and "lack of Opportunity". So, I think that the "Unemployment" and the "Poverty" are the two faces of the "same coin".

Thanks and Regards!

Yes, unemployment create poverty. If there is no money what will the person eat or one will go for begging. Sustainable development and awareness to create opportunities is very important.

Does Unemloyment cause poverty? Are you serious? Lets think about it.... If you do not make any money, then you are probably in poverty. If you really think about it, they are basically the same thing. Oh, well, to each man his own.
