[Poll] Sudan
May 28, 2006 - 09:30 AM

There has recently been a lot of fuss over Darfur region, in Sudan. The children there are starving and people are plunging through villages. They steal the men and boys, do awful things to the ladies and rip apart families. Recently a peace treaty has evolved. Does anybody have any comments, concerns, questions or additional information? I do not know a lot but it is interesting to read the articles on goolge and previously in newspapers.

Another question to put in your head is why do you think problems like this are not the big news stories when they are a huge issue to do with global justice. Does the media in Canada and united states only promote and emphasis local events and captivate stories within the borders?crying

it's been around 3 years, about 200.000 people got killed, millions forced to get off their land, and still doesn't seem to end.
i think we really need UN's army and not just Af Unioun's to take care of this conflict.those people there also roar the same, they need it to protect them.
on the other hands, many refugees esp.children sexually abused by the army who supposed to protect them instead of giving more suffer, just to get some candy or watching videotape. that's a serious problem.

The problem here as in any other conclifct-affected zone is that there is never an absolute political unity on the plan of actions on how to proceed to stop massacres..

Moreover, I would add Darfur gets much more attention than certain other regions of the world, say for example Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, or even DR Congo..

Point is that Darfur problem, sinbce its inception in 2003, never had a trivial solution. For example, knowing that Russia was defending some time Sudanese government and opposing the public opinion, contributed to disunity of the region. The reason of political disunity is partly because since 2000 the production ofexport of oil in Sudan are taking over its then-bigger source of economic output - Agriculture. So, many bigger and richer countries try to benefit and sway the the possible political solutions to problems of Darfur for their own good hence the disunity of international community on one action..

Things were even more aggravated after Chad declared war on Sudan in 2005....

As of 2006, Sudan remains one of the few nations not to have diplomatic relations with the United States...

Forgot to mention that recently at least some progess is happening as UN-AU joint mission was sent to assess the "damage" and find possbile solutions... So, as you can see Sudanese government is also making compromises and is for a moment not being totally absolutist saying said either "arm and equip better the existant AU forces" but also envisages the possibility of additional deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission..

some1onearth> believe me, UN peacekeepers are, on average, not "very effective" to say the least, and thats i guess one of many reasons why Sudanese government didnt want them in Darfur in the first place and secondly cause Darfur is a huge region and to have even 5000 UN peacekeepers will not make much of difference as it doesnt make uch difference now with around 7000 AU troops...Notwithstanding to mention the cost to mount a peacekeeping operation of such a measure...

latest news shows that Sudan's government is still cagey of letting UN troops along with AU force to help establishing a peace in the region..

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/B8D94998-92F3-452A-9450-E184CD3ADADE.htm

"Sudan initiated discussions of a possible deployment of UN troops but said no troops would be dispatched alongside the existing AU contingent without the government’s agreement.
.........
.........."

I have no idea when peace would be established in the region of Darfur but I hope it wont be too late ...

hello all,
I would like to add someting about what is running on in Darfure and Sudan in general, but for a while I realized that there is a main point here i need to clearify before any thing, that teh huge different is the word government among the world and the 3ed world mainly Sudan, when you are talking about governemnt actually you are talking about clear defined institutes, with certain functions, objectives and regulations under the established constitution of the contry, hence this is a state.. here the question is rising: is there any governemnt in sudan could satisfy this statement and conditions above!? I believe no, right now there is no legal governement in sudan, as there is no clear constitution and low. NO legal governement becuase what we call the current sudanese governemnt has got the rule through illegal procedure and created Doctatorship in Sudan for 17 years, So, its very logically that must be certain catastrophic concequances due to the political and institutional failure, one of these consequances is the unequal distribution of wealth and power among different sudanese parts, cultures and social groups due to the lack of demogracey human rights, resulting in a huge marginalization of more than 90% of sudanese people. the thing which consider to be the main cause of civil war in sudan, that people looking for their political, social and cultural rights.
continue...

I just wanted to add -

The conflict in Sudan, hasn't been around for 3 years, 5 years, or 6 years, war has been happening in Sudan for at least 35 years, -

We need to see more coverage of the attrocities of the country, which will see international communities reacting.

I have produced last year a powerpoint presentation that looks at the conflict of the country - over the past 30 years - if anyone would like to see this feel free to PM me-

Cheers,
Haylz

True true Haylz!

But we are talking here not about First, Second civil wars of Sudan or the conflict beween Chad and Sudan but particularly Darfur conflict which started in 2003...

But you are right.. th unrest, massacres, killings and violence reign in Sudan since at least 1956, the year when the First Civil war in Sudan started...

Yeh Mnopq - I realised you were talking about the conflict - that started in 2003 - but in previous posts people were saying that it was new- and that is a misconception with Darfur - people believe it is only just erupted.....

But yes! - just my two cents
