YMCA Career Academy

Hey everyone,
I am helping the YMCA here in Toronto with a new project they are working on -- launching a new type of school that they have in a few places in the US called a Career Academy. It will be a private school and likely will share the floor with TIG here in Toronto! They are working on logo designs and these two are the shortlist -- we're looking for some feedback on which one you like best and why! Thanks!

Hi Michael!
Definitely the first one, second one seems a little 'busy' to me. I'd love to hear more about this project, sounds like FUN!

Hey Mike - looks great!!
I would suggest going for the first one - the second one reminds me of old US universities - very traditional - My understanding is that your goal with this is to revolutionize the education system and you should have a logo that fits this description as well.
The first one is also more exciting and more likely to stand out and be noticed, especially by young students.
Hope this helps!
Evan.

Logos

I think both could have been better. The left one is in total lack of balance as it has the ymca on the right of the fancy A. I really like the fancy A, as it seems like a combination of Y and A.. making it YMCA Academy (YA), but it needs to be balanced more.
The right logo has the balance, but both the top YMCA and th emiddle leaf doesnt really flow my boat. Has the leaf been used earlier? if so, then ok.. I think it is just to rough/brutal if that makes sence to anyone..
My end comment is.. go with the left logo, but try making it balanced. Try placing the YMCA underneith the fancy A and then Academy underneith there again.. Make sure that the YMCA font is larger than the Academy font, so that it left and right aligns.. Also make it as wide as the bottom of the fancy A..
That may not be the perfect solution, but it helps balance the logo which is what it is missing now.. Play some more with it Drop the right one

Is the name of this school "Academy" or "A Academy"? Because that's what i'm reading in these logos.
I'm not quite sure what they're trying to suggest/what message they are trying to convey...
In terms of the typography, the left option seems to have something of a rennaisance feel, but then is thrown off by the obviously wrong 'C','D','E','M',and 'Y', that are from a completely different period [Watch the letter height there, too].
The one on the right also is confuddled - A very 20th century capital 'A' and 'ACADEMY' in the style of the College Jacket [smacks more of sports than careers, IMHO], but has a drawing of what i can only assume is a plant in the centre, in the style of a mediaeval sketch.
*shrug*
I'd have to say back-to-the-drawing board... What were the specs?

Second logo

The name of the school is 'Career Academy' So in your logo, let both words be reflected.
In which case, the second logo will be appropriate to use because it has alot of meaning.
The leaflike structure in 'A' communicates strong foundation for the children.
Just find somewhere in the second logo to include "Career"
