[Poll] How does The media effect our open mindedness?
May 24, 2006 - 05:03 PM

The media gives us standards to live by that draw there own conclusions. If we were able to have an uninfluenced minds I think we could discover great things in a great way. Is it possible to think with an open mind?shocked

I think things like this could change the way of the world. What do you think?

I always have been told to think outside the box. I consider the box what the media and other population influences us to do (how to be). I say don't draw a box! The possiblilities are then endless and you don't have to feel like you are taking a stretch out of the box.

Media's primary objective is to provide us information about events happening in the world.

Considering that our mindedness and lot of our soft skills depend on obtained information, media is playing a big role, whether it wants it or no, by providing us with info.

There is also in this same discussion board another threat discussing the same thing. Its also named Media or something like that; check that out for more opinions.

A number of theorists and departments of academic study have tackled this question.

Those interested in this topic may want to consider researching media in the areas of:

- women's studies
- child development
- semiotics

Theorists to consider:

- Noam Chomsky
- Douglas Rushkoff

well Media provides us with a lot of Info ...
it actually provides a" play of Information"...and we are left to sort it out and bring it to our own advantage .

I had once heard a quote ' have an open mind but not so open that your brain's fall out wink

Open mind means being free of any bias and the moment we are born ...we are influenced by a number of things ...media is one of the things that condition us ...now the way we are brought up and with the education we get we can use the information we gain to our own purpose ...we can think , analyse a particular advertisement or a piece of information and not be completely taken in by its glamour ...

But at a younger stage , parental discretion is a must to make children understand the ways of the media !!!

At a later stage , sometimes we are already so conditioned in our ways that we perceive the information we get in a particular way i.e we begin to interpret the info we receive according to the ideology that we follow .
that is we only see what we want to see !!

For more light on the issue one can refer to ;

1)JOhn Berger's Ways of Seeing

2)Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer (1944)The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception

I'll second Berger's Ways of Seeing. That's a great one - it's very clearly written and deals w/conventions of representation in Western fine arts -> mass media.

Ways of Seeing reminds me of another work, although more academic and less accessible in language: Walter Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction." It's something of a classic text and you can find it in his book Illuminations.

Yes you bet !!
Walter Benjamin is brilliant !
And his Thesis on the Philosophy of history is groundbreaking.

another interesting book for beginners is ;
John Storey 's Cultural Theory and Popular Culture
its a kind of summary of various approaches on Popular culture and guide to further reading !

Cheers!
