hey,
my family is from southfield, michigan, so i visit detriot a lot. can you explain to me why you don't think immigration is working? i don't understand quite what you're staying. is it that people don't get along? detriot is pretty messed up and a very racist place. there is a lot of poverty, and with few opportunities people end up fighting amongst each other. i'm in LA right now, and i think it's so messed up how segregated it is here, and how you have to drive a car to get anywhere. you should try reading "the death of american cities" by jane jacobs. you should also come visit toronto if you can, only 5 hour drive away. there you can see a lot of examples of immigration working. still that said, there is a clear colour line in toronto, with affluent neighbourhoods being more european, and low-income areas teeming with people of colour. but social services are a lot more advanced, so somehow it feels less stressed out knowing that we all have healthcare. racism is alive and well in north america. there are a lot of changes that need to be made. btw-- i'm jewish, not a zionist... from what i know the jewish community in detriot is fairly liberal. atleast my relatives are. doesn't mean they're not racist! i'm sure a lot of them are... but if you ever go to tj max, or buddies pizza, or star deli, you might run into my bubby, who is a zionist, and i bet she'd treat you the same as anyone else. not all jews are zionists, and not all jews are racist.
just to clear things up...

elle.

I agree with qnp's observations of Detroit. I grew up just outside of Detroit in a community which was proud to have orthodox jews and myriad of other nationalities call it home. My high school, for example, had its fair share of cliques, but for the most part, Chaldean, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, Agnostic, Atheist (etc etc) all got along well. I feel so very fortunate to have had the chance to experience multi-culturalism and have developed an understanding and identity that incorporated those aspects.
In addition, I have seen very vibrant and thriving immigrant communities who not only add to the local tax base but also send children to schools (which are struggling everywhere in Michigan due to drops in enrollment) and keep their neighborhoods as safe as possible. Certainly, anyone can find an exception to the rule if one looks hard enough. I can point out communities of "white" non-immigrants which are corrupt, unpleasant, and dangerous if I wanted. However, that does not serve the point. I think that the main focus of effort should be to get at the source of corruption [hint: look at the mayor, police chief, etc...its those in power--few if any are immigrants--who are corrupted] and the social systems that are failing.
I feel that trying to weed the US of immigrants is a futile, expensive and ineffective strategy. Any person versed in even basic history will recognize a critical pattern occurring here. When ever there is a break in a country's normal social functioning, such as a decline in employment, economic turmoil, etc., popular tide looks for a scapegoat. Most often, the ones scapegoated are immigrants or ethnic minorities. Why? Because nationalism requires a strong sense of "us" and there is no "us" without "them." What better way to encourage nationalism and thus avoid addressing a country's weak points than to make stronger that division between the "us" and "them." Us, the U.S. citizens versus them, the immigrants. Blaming other groups of people for one's own faults leads to nothing but hatred and discord, in my opinion

In cities like New York - which is litterally the focal point of American immigration - all the different nationalities get along amazingly well.
What you are talking about is exactly why something like school voutchers don't work - education is key to erasing racism - when kids of all colors and stripes go to school together -
But regardless - America is a nation of immigrants - and the country as a whole is an amazing example of how different people can live together in peace.
Immigration is probably the one issue I agree with Bush on - probably because it is the one he is a moderate on - we have to create a workable, practical plan to integrate and regulate the situation.

I agree with rschack and luke!
Let's forget for the moment G.W.Bush Jr's policies, especially foreign policy.
We shouldnt forget that America is the only country in the world which was formed with a conscious choice of people from different nationalities to quit their native countries and to head for a place where they would form a state where democracy and freedom wouldnt be just words. The only country in the world which vindicated and still vindicates the word "freedom" !
Yes, America is a country of immigrants, and as in any country with immigrants, there are bad exceptions. Detroit is since long one of focal points of criminals, but as Luke correctly pointed out with just as much and more immigration LA and even NYC are doing just fine, having even dedicated Chinese, Russian, English and other quarters where one would feel as if he/she is not in the US. But thats the nature of the US: to make it a melting point of all races and nations - to make it homogenous embedding all heterogenities in one point. Now, from time to time, due to local policies and other reasons this melting might not quite go in the good direction.. But then again, this is not a perfect world, but at least America does its best...

Battle on the Boarder?????

Bush talks about finding ways to integrate immigrants while at the same time announcing a battle on the boarder....... Does anyone else see the double speak here? I think the only thing I'd agree with Bush about is that "The Hungry Caterpiller" is a really great book. I heard that he hasn't actually read it though, so maybe we don't have anything in common afterall.
One has to also remember that we are all immigrants here on Turtle Island. Unless you have First Nations blood, you can't really have an anti-immigrant argument without risking hypocricy.
