I'm saddened to hear about the explosion which occurred, killing more than one hundred, near an oil line in Nigeria. This explosion happened when people were trying to tap into the pipe to take some of its contents for sale. Is anyone else bothered by the unfortunate ironic contrast this situation illustrates? From my understanding, Nigeria is an oil rich country. Yet, its own people see very little profit from this resource and, instead, live in poverty. Those who were attempting to steal the oil, although morally wrong, demonstrate a sad commentary on the inequity which exists in the world, often fueled by large corportations seizing control of valuable resources. In a country with an abundance of oil, its citizens have to resort to risking their lives and stealing in order to survive. I would argue that, at least to some extent, the natural resources of a country belong to its people, although that is rarely what happens. Does anyone know which oil company owns this pipe line? Is this company or others, giving back to the communities from which they take gas? Is anything being done to prevent further disasters like this from happening again? Am I wrong to feel like this oil company is using Nigeria and its people for its own benefit?

In my country Bangladesh, multinational companies are in charge of exploration and extraction of natural gas. They are selling gas on higher price. Now we are under pressure to export gas to our neighbouring country, though the experts are telling that we have not so much reserve of gas to export. Expert are favouring the value added use of gas such as establishment of gas based industries. In these gas field there are allegation of corruption. General people are not much benefited from that what was expected. In this way, I think multinational companies are extracting all the honey in allmost allover the world.
