Americans love "American idol". most of them don't miss a day of that show. It is singing contest, and the people should decide who will be the winner. I should admit this is intersting show.
Then another popular one is Amazing race. It is my favorite, actuallysmile
By the way I'm not American, but currently I live in here.

ola.Im from india. As you may be knowing, our movie industry,BOLLYWOOD,is the biggest movie industry in the world.Yeah it makes more movies than HOLLYWOOD.Television is pretty big now.Mostly the small screen is dominated by soaps, and drama rules the roost. But reality shows are quite popular too.Among the american shows perhaps the most popular is FRIENDS.FEAR FACTOR is a reeeeeeeealy cool show,so is the AMAZING RACE.What about USA?What's the most popular tv show there?SURVIVOR i guess.

here in guyana there's lots of american and indian programs on tv.
American soaps and reality shows are most popular, especially The Young and the Restless and Passions. Anyday i visit my aunt's house around the time Y&R is about to start, the house becomes silent and she's glued (along with anyone else in the house) to the sofa watching it. Fear factor is really popular among teenagers. Personally, I cannot stand a moment of any soap.
There are always indian movies showing since people watch a lot of them.
My faourite shows are Desperate housewives, Oprah, FRIENDS, and joey.
Local tv is mostly talk shows and just programs aimed at making money. There's also a "talent" show. But the people aren't usually very talented, it's really funny.
I like comedy and horror, but I really don't watch that much tv anyway.

hey Luke ,
Apart from the criteria you have mentioned there is another criteria i.e the number of movies made , and according to that Bollywood is the largest film industry in the world today.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_industry

Bollywood is the mainstream film industry in India but we also have regional film industries like Tollywood( from Tamil Nadu), Kollywood( Karnataka),Malluwood;-)( Kerala)etc . Infact Tollywood is actually catching up with Bollywood in the number of films produced in a year.

Bollywood is also a source of revenue for the country.with the population we have, even an average movie manages to grab some good collection.

"A normal movie which doesn't do well also is watched by minimum 30 million people in India. So the chances of film apparel being sold in large volumes are quite high."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/3025770.stm

Bollywood also provides employment to over two million people in India.
www.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=47365

i think all these factors contribute to create the reluctance that is there to open markets in India.

Ciao
Anu

anuriandima84 -

Hollywood makes one 120 million $ picture - Bolliwood makes 100 1 million$ pictures.

It also depends on what you consider a "film" - there are thousands of indie films make in LA and the states every year - plenty of them never have distribution - some go straight to DVD.

Bolliwood does not have ANY major titles that anyone here could name who lives outside of India.

Until they have some Star Wars and Spider-man films that gross 800 million + they are never going to be able to call themselves the biggest film industry in the world.

I am not suggesting they will not become Hollywood's major competition - it is bound to happen and Bollywood looks more competative than anything that coming out of Europe, Japan or China.

But you have to be reolistic - there is not a single Indian film which would be in the top 50 last year in terms of total gross.

just look at the numbers - "The American film industry grossed more than $51 billion, and India made approximately $1.3 billion."

http://www.uwgb.edu/4e/2006/03/30/033006enterBollywood.asp

that means America's film industry is basically 45 times the size of India's

the real things holding back India in this area besides a more organized financing structure and more ready capital to invest -

is a lack of technological expertise - there is nothing from Bollywood which can compete with Hollywod in terms of special effects -

their lack of non-Indian talent - you need crossover appeal - it can't be so "Indian" - in America actors are White, Black, Chinese, Latin American, British, Italian etc.

China has the same issue in this regard as India.

Also - India is relying too heavily on Musicals - that is a select audience - tennagers are never going to flock in great numbers to see a song and dance picture.

finally - India has such a protectionist policies it will make it difficult for them to sell their wares in places like Europe and North America.

Basically if you make an American film for instance that screens in India - the Indian government will not allow you to take the money you made selling your film - out of India.

what good does it do you to make say $5 million selling in India if the money has to stay there and you don't live there -

EVERY other country in the world - if I sell a movie to theaters in France or Japan or Brazil for example - allows you to take the money you make back home with you - they may tax it, and they all have their particular rules - but none are as strident as India's

What that means is that countries like the US will respond with similar protections against Indian product - and basically say "we'll change our rules when you change yours"

Please take notice that your argument has nothing to do with the topic.

survivor is not popular.
April 14, 2006 - 08:03 AM

Survivor is realy not the most popular show in America but then again everyone has there own opinion. But I do think that there are a number of televison shows in America that are infact popular in the U.S. For instance LOST the tv show is a #1 hit. C.S.I. Miami is a popular show, and yes Fear Factor is a popular show aswell. But thats just for the adults of America. There is the youth age group too. For the youth there popular shows are South Park, Family Guy,and many more shows.

most of us don't miss American Idol??

the rating for that show run about 12 million - out of a population of about 300 million - so there are not any shows that everyone watches -

everyone watches sports - the Superbowl is the most watched event on television every year.

indyeahn - Bolliwood is not even close to Hollywood - Hollywood grosses about 10 times as much $$ every year - it does not make nearly as many films either.

you are comparing it to studio films - when Hollywood also makes countless films for television - sci-fi network, the Major netowrks, Comedy Central, HBO, IFC, Sundance - all the indie films,

In Bolliwood the average film costs less than $1 million - by that measure Hollywood makes thousands of films with those kinds of budgets every year.

Avi Lerner - who is making my film which is more like a $30 million budge - is also making a total of 400 films this year ranging from $500,000 to $70,000,000

I agree however Bolliwood has the most potential to rival Hollywood in the future -

but it is a fraction of the size now - in terms of viewership, investment and gross receipts.

also - India will have to change some of its laws regarding foriegn films screening in their country before they will have success selling their movies abroad - India really has some unfair laws towards outside competition.

Australia

I think Desperate housewives, Lost and Friends are what the most people like (I can be wrong big grin)

My personal favourites - Scrubs, Friends, American Dad, Family Guy and The Glass House are awesome!

And yes hollywood does make more money but bollywood releases more movies.

i hardly get time to watch television ...but when i do i like to watch the ' apprentice' , F.R.I.E.N.D.S ( i love it and i think i have watched all the episodes repeated five or six times, but i still enjoy it)
i also like 'gilmore girls'
'amazing race' is another favourite ...i wd like to participate someday...
i also like 'Monk' which i never get to watch nowadays!!!

i hate 'soaps' but somtimes i watch them just to make fun of them and apply theories on them for my "gender studies" paper.... i also love to tease my mother with them . smile

the butt of all my jokes is the one called " the Bold and the Beautiful" which i found my aunt watching one day ...i nearly fell down from my chair when she acquainted me with the PLOT( if u can call it so) and our Indian soaps run on similar lines...
i am really curious as to how the first generation survives even the fifth generation on such shows...what is the secret behind their eternal youth?wink

ciao
Anu

Here in Canada, Canadian Idol is pretty popular with teens. Personally, I'm a huge fan of CSI Miami. Because Canadians watch mostly american produced TV shows, our popular shows usually reflect whatever is popular in the USA. Canada has tried to produce television shows and has had some success with comedy shows such as 'Royal Canadian Air Farce' and 'Corner Gas'. Of course, 'Hockey Night in Canada' is extremely popular especially now that the Stanley Cup playoffs are happening.

Yes, Canadian Idol and American Idol are exactly alike. The same format has now been licensed to 32 countries around the world.
The original show (called Pop Idol) came from Britain.
