There's a beautiful movie called Divided We Fall from the Czech Republic which won the Foreign Film Oscar in 2000 (not to be confused with the more recent movie which is a respone to 9/11). This is a movie set in WWII about the Nazi occupation and one family who takes in and hides a young Jewish man. It's fabulous.

i think most of those films are BS and they are usually made by white ppl who dont challenge the status quo.. they dont talk about the history of colonialism or the unequal power relations. i think its BS how white ppl can cause this, film it and then totaly isolate themselves from the problem. i have an indigneous friend from africa and a friend that survived the rwandan massacre and they do not agree with with these movies at all. also from an indignous perspective, the conditions created were done so by the colonizers!. im not trying to make anyone feel 'guilty', nor am i asking for pity but we all must implicate our selves in this mess now. as a male, i have to challenge notions such as sexism and homophobia and i recognize my role. i once sustained and perpetuated thses notions but now that i know i resist and think thats whats most important. nevermind the politics of pity and compassion.

I know it's already been mentioned, but Turtles Can Fly is the best film I've seen all year.
Also Rabbit Proof Fence is great. I'm on the lookout for a film dealing with the current plight of indigenous australians other than Beneath Clouds and Aussie Rules. It's in the media enough, surely there's a few films out there?

I can't believe nobody has mentioned All The Invisible Children ! Has anyone seen it?
I loved this film. It was produced to benefit Unicef and the World Food programme, and it comprises of seven films of 15-20 minutes about children who, as the title suggests, live hardscrabble or oppressed lives below the radar of adult society.
I've just seen Innocent Voices (Voces Inocentes) - a superb masterpiece.

cant believe that no one mentioned Legends of the Fall, Magnolia, and Rain Man. they are awesome and have strong and deep messages especially Magnolia. it made me realize that we ll never be able to get rid of past and its pain 'its not going to stop' we ll live with pain not get over it.

Has watching a film ever moved you to take action?
Also, do you know of any examples of when films or docos have led to social change?
I can't say a specific film has led me to social action... but a few films that have influenced my interest in social issues include...
“To Kill a Mocking Bird”
“On the Waterfront” (while I don’t agree with Eliza Kazan’s use of the film as a vehicle to defend his naming names to HUAC, I think the film itself is incredibly powerful)
“Dead Man Walking”
“Gandhi”
“Do the Right Thing”
“The Killing Fields”
“Boys Don’t Cry”
“Born on the 4th of July”
"12 Angry Men"
I’m not sure if I can think of a particular film that provoked social change – but I do think films have been mirrors and discussion points for changes going on in society. For example – films like “The Defiant Ones” (1958) “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962) and “Guess who’s Coming to Dinner” (1967) could all be seen as reflections of the civil rights movement at that time. A very concrete example would include “The Battleship Potemkin” which was not only about revolution but actually applied political ideas to the very form/structure of the film…
Sorry – I realize all the films I talked about are Hollywood fiction films but I could go on for ages with this topic so will leave it at that
Interesting topic!

i guess all movies have a message, the issue is did you personally learn anything from the movie?
because i could watch a cartoon/animation like happy feets and i feel encouraged to find my own style and forget my weeknesses.
anyway, movies i can readily think of are...
Hotel Ruwada and Sometimes in April ( the sad thing about killing ourselves for stupid reasons)
Cold Mountain ( what happens when our Men go to war)
take the lead ( you can be the best even if you are the society's reject)
