Movies with a Message
April 11, 2006 - 12:39 PM

So people say that a picture is worth a thousand words. A movie must be worth a million.
Over the last few years there seem to be a heap of brilliant docos and fictional films that bring up some really interesting issues about human rights, corporations, war, fast food and all that jazz.
Its a great way to get the message out there to the mainstream and an easier and often more engaging way to kearn about stuff.
Im writing an article for a youth Magazine and I would love to get some advice from y'all about what are the best films out there.

OK, so some of my top 10 are:

The Take - set in Argentina post economic collapse - really inspriring

Darwin's Nightmare - A doco that illustrates globalisation set around Lake Victoria in central africa and the industry of fish for guns that exists

Bowling for Colombine - one of Michael Moores classics about the kids who shot up the school and how this violence is related to the culture of war in the usa

The Constant Gardener - this fictional film came to the screens last year and it was about drug companies testing medicine on poor africans. Its well worth seeing but pretty devastating (well thats how i felt).

Y'all?

Are we talking about films released recently - or all time?

All time you have 8 1/2, Seven Samuri, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, Godfather I & II, Apacolypse Now, Annie Hall, Schindler's List, Citizen Kane, ChinaTown, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest - I could go on and on -

At the begininng is "the Tramp" Chaplan Charlie - The Great Dictator, Modern Times, City Lights, Gold Rush

of new things - Motorcycle Diaries was decent - City of God is better, American History X, In America...

what kind of film are you looking for? Great classics

Well, anytime really - new or old classics as long as they have a global justice theme of some kind and would be interesting a relevant for young people to watch today.

Oh and some that are inspiring instead of just 'slit your wrists the world is terrible' would be great too.

Incidentally, I watched Turtles Can Fly last night - set in a Kurdish community on the Iraq/Turkey border just before the US attack of Iraq in 2003. Brilliant and tragic and powerful.

Constant Gardener is awesome! Very sad though.

Also, The Girl In The Cafe is an awesome movie. based around last years G8 summit and the MDG's, intermingled with a love story with a difference. At least its a break from the run of the mill action and comedy and chick-flicks!heh

to those who like the constant gardener - they should see City of God - same director - better film.

Paths of Glory is an excellent old film, Full Metal Jacket, the Deer Hunter, Malcom X, Dog Day Afternoon - The Pianist came out recently by Polansky.

probably one of the Best ever done in this sort of loose Genre you are talking about is the "Bicycle Thief" by De Sica

But seriously guys - the Constant Gardener is ok - its decent - but not great.

Has watching a film ever moved you to take action?

Also, do you know of any examples of when films or docos have led to social change?

Harry Potter and ....( all of them), LOrd of the Rings, The Lion King (this one was truly inspiring), Benhur, Gone with the Wind, .....i cant remember anymore at the moment !

There are of course some Bollywood movies which come to my mind but i dont know if anyone can relate to them ...anyway ....I liked Roja ( The Rose), Parineeta( The Maried Woman), Lakshya( goal ), Swades( homeland), Maachis( Matchstick),Bombay,etc...

I havent watched that many movies to actually judge !
but among the ones I have watched these come to my mind most readily.

I think a good well made movie certainly sends some good message. whether its about human relations, or social issues , good movies always have volumes to convey to the audience in a language which people understand most deeply.

100 ljudi 100 cudi...translated literarlly something like this...100 people 100 minds...smile but i will speak for all...big grin....here we prefer films from Europe or China or Japan...so the list is:
1. Breaking the waves - Lars fon Trier
2. Dead Man - Jim Jarmusch
3.Silence - Ingmar Bergman
4. Wild at hart - David Lynch
5. Der himmel uber Berlin - Wim Wenders
6. Thorne of blood - Akira Kurosawa....

and many others..of course....

Nobody else has said it, so I will:
Crash. It's the movie that won the most recent oscar for best picture. It's about race relations in LA; follows several storylines about several different racial groups.
It makes you think about race relations in a new light. Don Cheadle was great in it.

Originally movies were introduced to entertain...

With grwing complexity of the world and societies, certain directors thought to pass a message through to audiences, which is not a bad idea by itself... But as it became a staple affair, many, if not all, movies try to have some message...

i like what Peter Jackson, after remaking "King-Kong" said, "I am not one of those directors with message, I just like to entertain people.."

smile

of my favourite movies i have to mention, National Treasure, Terminator,Charlie Angels I, II, Lord of the Rings, X-men, Spiderman I,II, Siddhartha, Ghandi, Underworld I, II, and of course from cartoons, Shrek, Ice-Age I,II, Madagskar, Fiding Nemo, etc

As you see i like not only "message" movies but pure entertainment ones with no great story smile

H.

Movies that are more political that I'd recommend:

- Apocalypse Now which is based on Joseph Conrad's book, Heart of Darkness. If you watch the redux version, it's really like a long descent into utter madness.

- Life and Debt which is a documentary about the economic development of Jamaica after accepting loans from the IMF.

- Dr. Strangelove, a Kubrick film about the cold war, devestatingly funny.

- Black Rain by Shoei Imamura, one of Japan's greatest new wave directors. A very harrowing film about survivors of Hiroshima. He also directed The Pornographers, a more experimental and less accessible film that was highly critical of Japanese government policies during and after the SCAP occupation.

Hm, that's all I think of from the top of my head, I'll post if I come across more.
