Your opinions on Digital Rights Management

I am doing a personal research, if you have time please try to give your opinions. I would appreciate it very much.
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a general term that describes a range of technologies which are used to control the distribution and access to digital information, typically mass-media content (e.g. books, music, movies), software or data files (e.g. documents, spreadsheets, databases). Many big companies such as Microsoft, Sony and Apple have already used these technologies in their digital products mainly to protect their copy rights. For instance, one of the main functions of DRM is to stop anyone without the license from downloading movies, music, games or any other forms of digital contents.
Needing your opinion on this:
In what way did you become aware of the existence DRM?
