Hi all,
Let's not confuse "media" with "news" - broadly speaking, media is the form of communication (a New York Times OpEd piece, a Van Gogh painting, the latest Take That album). News, on the other hand, is specifically, the reporting/account of what has happened.
I think the "ills" of all News (whether mainstream or independent), as has already been mentioned earlier, is spin/bias/opinion. I agree that you shouldn't just trust everything that you read or watch - what is presented is a microwave ready version of the "truth." It's digestable, we understand it readily, and if we accept it, it tastes good.
Consider the difference between:
a) A man was shot by police officers at 9 pm last night, outside of a nightclub.
b) Black men are violent people, as police officers had to fatally take down one individual who was a danger to other nightclub patrons.
One is pure fact reporting, the other is opinion. Neither are more "true" than the other, partly because you cannot compare their "truthiness."
But both can be found in the "news" - the challenge is knowing which one is being presented.

yeah ok and still didnt solve it what if none of them is true ??????
well the first one was stating a fact
a facts is already a fact and still adding the "he was danger to the security" at the end to make the suspense to attract the reader or viewer but still none of them was true :S

In big name television channels its off of the corperation's heads, what they think, based off statistics, people want to see. Not forgetting of course that they are being paid to show things to people from other big name corperations.
Everyone complains about the media, i do too, however what do we do to fix it? Is there even a way to fix something that is produced based off of a known bias source? If i've gotten something wrong or left something out let me know, or if someone has an idea of how they think the media problem can be fixed.
I agree with mubby saying that media has its own advantages and disadvantages! Although one of them may seem stronger!

Media : a way of communication that communicates what the issurer party wants you to know .

Indeed, the media can be no other way but bias, because it is human born. Those who are against the current media trends may have good reason, but we can't take one flaw and have it ruin the entirety of press for us. It’s simply a matter of extracting the fact from the surrounding opinion and making an informed decision based upon the reality. Look past what you do and don’t agree with, and find what’s proven truth. Then make your own decision. The media distortion is no greater than the distortion we make in our own minds, so don’t let it bother you. Use it for the information, nothing else.

I see where you are coming from, my recommendation is perhaps a general distrust of anything someone in a position of media power says, seeing as they have their own reasons, not to say they will all lie. Just think for yourself is maybe what i'm saying...

One simple question, where would we be without media?
It has it's advantages and disadvantages and maybe it's my age but I think that it's up to an individual to take out whichever message they choose from a particular media source.
For example, there was this huge thing about banning skinny models and how the media, but particularly fashion magazines, were putting out this message that you HAVE to be skinny. Well I didn't get that message because I CHOSE not. Everything about media is a choice and you're the only one that can choose what messages you want to take out of it.

I agree to a point. people should be able to make their own educated decisions based off of the knowledge given to them, whether it be biasd or not. However, i do believe that the principle of neutrality the media should be upholding is being violated in a huge way. Yes, there is always going to be biased no matter what, but in todays world of information, this biased it at an all new extreme. It has come to a point that most of the major medias are being controlled by the same people, most of which have the same political views, and it is clear to see how one sided those news forums are because of that.

with due respect to the views and the opinions expressed by the members, my contestation is that the media is indulging (and has indulged in the past ) in manufacturing reality and this effort is nourished by the brass that flows from the corporates and other stakeholders with vestd interests...what we erroneously call information is nothing but a tranlation or manifestation of the manufactured reality that the interested parties in question want us to brainwash with....media, no matter which one or type is behaving far more irresponsible..it has deviated from playing a role as a development catalyst and a building block of democracy, social justice, equity, human rights.....

Well, as I've covered all the post of this specific discussion board, I preferred to say something about this point. Today we’re within “century of Media”. Thousands of hundreds of different categories of media are available around the world mostly without money, you can’t find out what ever you need without hard restriction banned you obtain what you are looking for. Along with that, modern sophisticated software specially animations and sound’s ones who have bad impact the truthfulness of Media, how many times do we see sounds, images that have propagated and fictionalized. All of those things are decreasing the truthfulness of the Media’s today.
