Abstudy Down Under - Advance Aborigines
Jan 24, 2003
|
|
Hi there,
All I have is the message specially for young Australians, two humble requests is all it
contains.
I don't know much about the culture, heritage and history of the people down under. I don't know
much about the history of the first Australians - the people the world generally calls Aborigines,
or black Australians as they are known in some quarters.
What I know though is just a few names in cricket and rugby and of course Cathy Freeman (athlete),
John Pilger (journalist) and HE PM John Howard (ruler).
I am happy to see that Australians are celebrating such a solemn day. From my limited sources, I've
learnt that Abstudy was abolished following HE Howard's ascendance to power. If this is still the
case - my first request to all young Australians: Please work towards its re-instatement.
My last plea to all young Australians, please advance towards a non-racist fair Australia.
Australia, says UN, is a racist country. In recognition of the survival of the natives in your
county, please work towards the survival of a non-racist Australia.
OZ, like SA - albeit rightwing threats - can be a beautiful non-racist country, the young must work
towards realizing it and advancing fairness!
Please join me as we sing: "In history’s page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair... With
courage let us all combine To Advance Australia Fair"

Abstudy Abolished?
Jan 27, 2003

Is Abstudy really abolished?
Excuse me Im no Australian me Im Zimbabwean but I don't believe Abstudy has been abolished. Can any
Australians anyone who knows Australia better verify this? John Howard is known for vehemently
opposing the worsening state of human rights in Zim, so how can it be that he is doing the same in
his country? The man is not a war monger even though he supports King George Dubya II of Washington
therefore why he is making so much noise here in Zim is not to create confusion. He is making so
much noise in Zim cos he is a peacelover and since this is true how can he be racist?
Why do people talk about racism and erosion of human rights as if Zimbabwe has sole rights to these
negative things? Why arent we hearing ABC and CNN and Sky talking about these bad things in
Australia - so you see why I dont belive it? Are there opposition parties in Australia, why they
dont get platform to talk about racism and human rights as it happens with MDC here?
Some South Africans and Africans have likened his opposition to Australia playing in Zim to double
standard! Is it really, really true that he does not care for the Aborigines? Some years back I saw
"The Secret Country" and "The last dream" documentaries about Australians and their struggle I was
under the impression that things have changed since then. Ashwin Desai an African sociologist said
"John Howard is busy stealing land from historically downtrodden Aborigine people". If this is true
Howard is a man of double standard and those aborigines have a long way to go. What I need to know
for sure these bad things they say about Australia are they really, really true?

zanziBar!
The truth is quite easy to get. That's exactly what you've done. The fact that you yourself mention
that some people have likened the Australian ruler's opposition to Aussie playing in Zim double
standards.
To me that's like you're saying "Thank you very much I've got what I was looking for! Have I gotten
what I was looking for?"
I'm not sure what ABC you're talking about - is it Australian Broadcasting Corp, indeed once in a
while these issues are highlighted.
NB: ABC recently covered Waanyi (natives) vs Pasminco (mine company) dispute recently.
Penelope Debelle (journalist) has been refused entry into the native camps and cameras are banned.
Amnesty International will (one day) give you all the the updates (trouble is Howard won't allow AI
to investigate either). If you watched "Welcome to Australia" you'll know that these things are
still pertinent.
Once more you must remember that (generally) media reports are based on the Western priorities
(agenda-setting). This is of course why CNN and other mainstream media organizations are not too
keen covering such thorny issues.
On Howard and Zimbabwe, I can't be 100% sure why Howard of all people. Personally I think his
inclusion is on its own an indictment of addressing the Zimbabwean human rights issue. To me it's
like asking a murderer to try a murderer (excuse the gross example).
To get back to the original concern - if at all Abstudy has been abolished, you and I do not know
but maybe someone down under or somewhere on earth will know and tell us - ONE DAY...
