How young people view leadership
March 21, 2006 - 12:58 PM

Do you think young people view leadership differently from older generations? How so?

Personally, I think that for young people today, a 'feeling' or 'label' of leadership can come from a lot of different things that never existed before - for example, in online forums, people can emerge as leading people through discussion and thought.

This means that the idea of leadership is much more flexible and less defined (in a business hierarchy or political sense) than previous generations saw it.

What do you think?

hey,
I think leadership now is totaly different then older generarions , knowing that we can practice leadership in many ways ( which doesnt have to be all functional , but in my opinion the tradition way of leading which were practiced b4 by the great leaders is the most effective even now.
you gave an example of a kind of new way of leading the ((online forums)), in my opinion it's not really a way of leadeing it's just sharing thoughts, or a kind of attepmt to change whatever young ppl can change.

hey guys,

It is true that lot fo things changed; moreover, the advent of new technologies, demographic movements, and economic developments of recent decade had all their hand into the evolving world of nowadays...

As everything else, so the style of doing things changed, or rather evolved, and was taken to the whole new level.

The Internet was very much the push towards the globalization, whic really took of starting from 1990s...

Coming back to leadership now. Well, leadership, as everything else, had to adjust to changes and it started to be associated witha much borader term, a term that was absent before, a dimension not present some time ago, the virtual world - the Internet. Thats one of its new dimentsions..

Second one is the fact that things happen faster than before and that leadership had to evolve to make it possible to not lag behind. Now, i know it alll sounds too abstract but new theories of leadership emerged in the midst of all these changes such as charismatic, trasformational, transactional, visionary, stringenet, value-based etc theories which all all try to base themselves upon the behaviours, treats and attitudes of contemporary leaders versus the previous theories of leadership(trait, behavoiral and contingency theories all in searof of universal traits, behavoiral patterns and situational parameters characterizing successfull leaders of that time).

And thirdly even these new theories, which were supposedly able explianing the new leadership styles, are lacking or not giving enough attention to several major points such as the ever-increasing role of passion, compasion, ethics and perpetual learning....

These few and some others are the new "feats" that any contemporary leader needs to tackle his/her daily as also longterm problems.

Not to forget to mention that whereas these new "feats" were left out of most of theories, there is nothing new in them; they all encompanss basic human values, as leadership should also do smile
So nothing new there, its just some "new feats" of basic human principle need to get more attention plus the dynamism and changibility of these "feats" should increase smile

Cheers,
H.

P.S. I wrote a diploma work called "Leading in hard times"

check this site out:

changing times and job profiles have also resulted in the shift in the defining factors of leadership, not to mention the sensitivizing of various social and cultural issues.

New technologies are probably creating new areas for leadership and allowing new styles and modes of leadership depending on the nature of the new environment and its requirements.

Flexibility and innovation are terms becoming more important and more dynamic in a sense when considering the attributes of a good leader. I think this reflects recent times where both flexibiiity and innovation are changing at a rapid pace and people are becoming desensitised to the "wow"-factor of novel ideas and products. Thus, one really needs to be even more innovative and creative to influence people in a way that a leader should do.

How young people view leadership

I read some of the posts and a believe in so many of the points, but I think that leadership does not arrive from education, or a career.I am do not intend on disregarding education. I mean it is the food for thought that weso need to be heard and to have a understanding on youth and it's develpemtn and how we can do so much more to help those that do not have the chance to chant tere voices, for what ever thereason might be. Leadership is a passion that you inseal within yourself to make the worlda mcuh more better palce to live in at this current moment. Youths rearly have that opportunity and when they do it's questioned. We view leadership as a way to voice our opinions, be part of a community. Globolization is evolving at a rapit pace, that we rearly are not given the opportunity to challange what leaders of nations think. We use that voice, that we have in forums, in discussion boards and blogs and in summitts that get you to collaborte for the benfits of youth and there wealth what of the advocay is that you strongly advocate for. The average percentage of age brackets using blogs and discussion portals to view our opinion oreven to share our ideas, our knowledge is taken with great pride.

We live in a millnium where we are very fortunate to have the technology and advancements that we do to make our points across. Still a this moment how many youth ahve been taken the privilige ( Houman right) to be heard or voice there opinions, they are straving, or forced to be married or into cheap labor, because they are the only household income entering into the family to support the amount of mouths to feed. I take pride in having the opportunity to share my tohughts and advocacy with other youth so that we can make that difference for our brother and sisters who do not have the opportunity.

As I am realizing that I am not leadership material. I am fortunate to be in a healthy state of mind. The leaders in my minds are those youth/children that go out to survive for the day..those are my leaders and not the educated, suet wearing,ones...
Thank you to the youth who made takingitglobal apart of our daily life. We have a voice because of that youth.

In this world of today, many young peeps out there see leadership as oppression in all forms and modes. Its our Job to now to educate them on leadership. i asked a friend of my this same question, he simply said all leaders are bad.

Although I consider myself solely a member of the newer generations and have not done research on leadership in the past, I do feel that the definition of a good leader has changed some over the years. In today's world I think more leaders are being encouraged to stray from dictatorship-like ruling to one that is more encompassing. Good leaders today don't work solo but at least ask for input from others, try to see different perspectives and should be trained to work in a multi-cultural environment. I would speculate that forty for fifty years ago leaders of large corportations down to leaders of school clubs would not have had even basic knowledge of cultural competence. Young people today should be trained to not just be good leaders but also be good team-mates in a world that is becoming more and more globally connected.
