Youth and ICT Scams

This is just a quick warning to everyone to be aware that there are people in the world willing to use the legitimate area of ICTs and youth for their own profit.
This afternoon I received an email purporting to be from a young woman in Nigeria (Nomie Oke) seeking funds to pay school fees for her studies in computer science. Having received many scam emails in the past, I went to Google and entered in her name and several lines of the email to see if it showed up in lists of known scams. After about five minutes of searching, I found that indeed the identical message had circulated last fall under a different name and email address (Ado Adamu).
If you receive this message, please know that it is a scam. If it comes under a different name, please add that name to this discussion thread in the hopes that we can make others around the world aware of it.
It is truly a shame that there are people in the world who can make others hesitant to support real people and real projects because there are so many scams in the world.

Terri,
it is sad to Hear that someone from my Country is doing something Like this. But i believe it is not a Nigerian Factor as some people may think. Myself and a number of well intentioned youths in Nigeria are involved with various ICT4D initiatives and we do seek financial assistance from certain organisations to implement our work. I hope people like this will not give a negative projection to what the Nigerian Youth represent.

Nigeria vs. South Africa

I hear you... my guess is that the person running the scam may not even be in/from Nigeria. Maybe you could clarify one thing for me, though.
At the end of the version of the message I received were a couple of additional lines of text:
"YOU MAY ALSO CONTACT MY SCHOLL DIRECTLY AT BENONI@BENONIHIGH.COM
WEB SITE: HTTP://WWW.BENONIHIGH.COM"
I checked the site and many parts seem to be under construction. Is this a real school, or is it part of the scam to make it seem more realistic? When I searched on Google for any schools named Benoni High, it seemed like this Web site is hosted on a server in South Africa. But, I still couldn't cross-reference from enough places to figure out whether the school actually exists in S. Africa or not. Thoughts?

Hi Terri
I just went to the website and it looks like it is in South Africa in the province of Gauteng the same province as Pretoria and Joberg. The web site seems to be mostly complete as well. It says that Ado Adamo is the head master. But one can never be too careful.
