cigarette butt litter awareness

Hi!
Don’t you just hate seeing a smoker drop their butt?? Why do they do that – they don’t litter a gum wrapper! It’s just a habit that they probably are not even aware that they are doing.
HELP MAKE THE WORLD BUTT-FREE!!!
Luckily, most smokers are more than willing to dispose of their butts properly once they are made aware of their detrimental action – which is why adding an awareness message to cigarette packages would be so effective in stopping the pollution problem. In fact, when my sisters and I have talked to them, they are unaware that they are littering, it's just a habit - the way they've always disposed of their butts. Once they are aware of the littering, they stop!!
We have a petition to include the words: "Please Dispose Of Cigarette Butts Properly" on all cigarette packs. Please help us get support for this because we are anticipating national legislation to be proposed on the issue, and want to show the cigarette industry that a change is needed for the sake of our earth!
Cigarette butts are the number one form of litter and are consistently at the top of all beach and roadside cleanups, and many of the wildfires and deaths to animals and marine life is caused by dropped butts.
SIGN THE PETITION!!! Tell your friends, link it to sites you know about - please help end this disgusting habit!!
The petition is at:
www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/901874823
Let me know if you have ideas of how to spread the word. Thanks!

Hi everybody. Smokers are really big problem for our community nowadays. That is one of the biggest and widest problems of our world. The most annoying thing is that in countries of Central Asia there are millions of smokers that DO NOT want to quit. And they just throw their cigarrettes everywhere in the streets. If you want to smoke - throw your cigarretes to cans. But the best desicion will be NOT SMOKING EVERYWHERE.

This cigarette litter problem makes me very angry. These smokers think they are somehow being romantic or displaying rebelliousness by disregarding all health warnings and also littering the streets with their cigarette butts, boxes and cellophane wrappers. What they are really showing the world is that they are addicted to a terrible habit which controls them and has nothing to do with expressing one's individuality.
I can't tell you how many times I have been walking behind some (usually young) person who then throws his lit cigarette on the sidewalk, or if he is on a bridge, right into the water! Often I am driving behind someone at night and they just throw their cigarette out the car window. HEY, THE WORLD IS NOT YOUR ASHTRAY!!!!
I think the solution to this problem is the same solution to other types of discarded litter like bottles and cans: force every smoker to pay a deposit on each cigarette which will be returned to them if they bring the butts back to the store!
I don't have proof, but I strongly suspect that the tobacco companies are paying Hollywood film makers to include "gratuitous" smoking in their movies. It seems as if every movie has non-stop smoking, far more than in real life. I recently saw the movie "The Reader" in which the young protaganist starts awkwardly smoking half way through the film. I later asked my wife who had READ THE BOOK whether smoking played such an important role in the book. She said there was absolutely no mention of smoking or taking up smoking anywhere in the book. Why was the smoking then included in the film???? I think the director or someone must have received money from the tobacco companies. This is a sneaky way to put smoking advertising in front of young impressionable audiences. I think such films should carry a warning just like for sex and violence. CAUTION: This film contains scenes of smoking. I will not go to see such movies.

We all know that smoking is bad for health but that's also a personal choice and smokers deserve the same respect as non-smokers as long as they don't invade our space and respect their environment. This is unfortunately not always the case, and people litter everywhere.
Lots of people tend to use the "theory of the path of least resistance" in their life and find it easier to just drop their litter than walk a few meters and use a bin. What can we do? I don't know, may add more facilities in specific spot we want to keep clean. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Reach for the moon because even if you miss you will land among the stars"

Dear Fabrice,
Yes, I think it is a private decision to smoke and damage one's health, just like it is a private decision to eat fatty food and damage one's health.
However, one should not damage the health of innocent bystanders! And one should not expect non-smoker taxpayers to pay for your health care!
Now as for the laziness of smokers who just flick their butts on the sidewalk, here in Japan one can buy small fireproof round or square boxes with lids into which you can flick your ashes and put the cigarette butt when you are finished with it. Then you can empty the small box when a legal opportunity arises. How about that? Somehow I suspect this very reasonable solution would never succeed in a macho country like Australia or the USA.

I actually confronted someone that had just dropped a cigarette butt on the ground and said, "excuse me, I think you dropped something". The lady looked at me and smashed the cigarette butt into the ground with her foot as she looked me right in the eye with a snarly face.
At that time i realized that being some kind of vigilante was not the way to tackle the problem, it has to be something that hits the heart strings with those that litter. I don't know what will work? I just know what didn't work on that particular occasion.
Making the cigarette butts more biodegradable wouldn't hurt either. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Maui Wedding Packages

Hey Guys
I think that litter is still a big problem in most places, and cigarette butts are just one part of the problem.
Like others have said, smoking is a personal choice, and I think some of the anger towards all smokers here is a little unfair.
As an "ex-smoker" who still enjoys the occasional light-up, I have always believed in disposing of all rubbish appropriately, whether it be carrying around bottles until I can recycle them appropriately, or carrying around a portable ash tray until I find a bin.
Please don't single out smokers as the only litter problem - we're not all evil.
Thanks,
Laura
