Every Day should be Women's Day
March 11, 2006 - 08:45 AM

International Women's day was very interesting for me. I saw women (men & children) collaborating in order for peace/social justice...campaigning against violence and oppression and also celebrating the lives of women everywhere. It made me happy...but at the end of the day I realized that with centuries of civilization, education, technology, relative peace, religion and wealth no one can explain the phenomenon of Violence against Women, much less eradicate it.

Where there's war women are used as shields and weapons as well...they are forced into prostitution...are victims of tactical rape, psychological torture, forced impregnation and horrible deaths. If they survive they represent the defeat and shame of their communities.

Even in the "first world" countries women cannot achieve the level of security that men enjoy both at work and at home...our bodies are maps of oppression.
We are paid less for equal or more work, or are relegated to menial jobs to support our families...we stay away from dark alleys for fear of being raped, kidnapped or killed...and cannot express opinions or attempt to speak about our oppression without being called feminists.

Indeed International Women's Day should be about celebrating sisterhood and womanhood, but after reflecting on this I realized that there should be no need for campaigns and protest for equality; we were born equal. We as women should not have to beg our other half to stop beating, humiliating, maiming and killing us.

Everyday should be WOMEN'S DAY. Let's celebrate/love/cherish and empower the women in our lives without denying them agency.

Hi, this is Nancy. That was a brilliant post Shelanda. I found myself agreeing with much of what you said.
And you are most correct, in today's society women are still being oppressed verbally, physically and mentally.

'Reclaim the night' is also a prime example of lobbying by women (men & children) to proudly march with their candles under the cover of darkness to say "Im not afraid", but after that one night every year, we revert back to being afraid. Afraid of waiting at the dark empty train station, afraid of that approaching male silhouette, afraid even in our own homes.

We Can all do something about this! We must. Mothers can raise their sons to respect their sisters and (women), women can demonstrate leadership/equality while in a relationship. Numerous other things can be done, but small steps will construct big results.

definately! we should be remembered for all the hard work we've been doing! while we argue about which sex is better, id say none! but my "opinion" is that women work hard to take care of children, and house work, while men work to get money. sure its not easy but no pain no gain =D
