Future Without Terrorism: Project goes live!
January 22, 2003 - 06:56 AM

Greetings everyone!

Add your name to the movement to stop war being used as a means to an end.

Sign the ‘Future Without Terrorism’ petition now and become a messenger to the leaders of the world – tell them that violence and aggression should not become tools of political and social change and that we can - through peaceful means - end terrorism and the horror of violent conflict in the 21st Century.

So add your name to the petition demanding a peaceful approach to the biggest issue facing the global community now! It only takes a minute, and every name helps – no matter who or what you are.

Use our “tell a friend’ tool to get others to join, or simply send on this message to everyone and anyone you know.

This petition has been the product of co-operation and perseverance by a number of TakingITGlobal members, they include;

Marcus Bingemann (web guy)
Cara Holcombe (co-writer)

My special thanks goes to everyone who added their two cents to the wording and message of the petition. There are many of you out there, and you know who you are - my eternal thanks.

My only hope is that you all tell as many people as you can, and together we all take a step forward to end violence being used as a means to an end.

Yours in Peace,
Mike Blanchard

Great job, but you may want to let Marcus know that the links to privacy policy and contacts aren't currently working. They'll likely get more signatures if people are reassured that their addresses won't be used for spam or follow up mails.

yah the privacy policy was supposed to be up, but the site server was being annoying and not letting Marcus (the web guy) upload it.

Ive been re-assured that whenever the tech support people wakeup, it will get uploaded.

The only reason we ask for people's emails is to stop them submitting their names more than once.

Thanks Martin and Terri.

Hey, how are you guys? Yeah Mike I went and signed the petiton a few days ago, and I think that it's great. I completely agree, I coudn't have said any of that better myself! smile Did I already tell you that you have a gift for words?
I have been letting people know about this, and I've told my friends to go sign it. Hopefully they will listen, I'm not a very influential person! smile
And oh yeah, those links are working now.

Have a great day, everyone!

Wow, that was a very passionate site. However I think I'm going with hold my signiture for the time being. And its not because I disagree with your cause, on the contrary I am very interested in becoming involved. The problem is that people with a lot more voice than us are saying the same things with no effect on US policies. I believe tht there is a solution that does not involve war, however we cannot depend on our leaders to find it for us. The only way that we will be capable of getting our message through is by simutaneously finding the solution, and presenting it with the signatures in a comprehensable format. Maybe I'm just in the wrong place, if so point me in the right direction. However in my opinion, if we truely want a Future without terrorism, we will have to invision it, we will have to lay the foundation, perhaps the signatures is the easy part. Create a feasable plan to avoid war, end terrorism that is acceptable to all, that's the hard part do that and the signatures will come at you like an avalanche.

in response and more

I believe that, yes, we do need a combined effort on the part of all of those who are opposed to going to War, and I also believe that this combined effort must also include a vision/or plan of how this future might be achieved

However,

I do not understand why you did not find it in yourself to sign the petition. We realise that our petition is not revolutionary stuff...and it mostly just reflects the feelings of many young people.... But I speak for myself (and I think also Pred and also Marcus) when I say that we just had this overwhelming urge to "DO" "something".... just "anything" a little more proactive in our contribution towards the growing global consciousness opposing War.

I am of the belief that every little bit counts. Therefore, I think that all efforts should be supported, whether they are small or large!!

Soooo...If anyone is interested...here are some great petition sites, and a couple with loads of info on the mass protests being held on Saturday 15 Febuary!

An open letter from America to Europe...
http://www.moveon.org/openletter/.

http://www.moveon.org/nowar (I think this would have to be the most widely circulated petition?? correct me if I'm wrong!)

http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?list=sub&sub=30 This site has all you need to know about the peace rallies being held around in major cities around the world on Feb 15 (has a link to a permit petition which is quite good)

Another one about all of the peace rallies/protests
http://opendemocracy.com/debates/article.jsp?id=6&debateId=33&articleId=877

Anyway...sorry...I'm getting carried away! I'd also just like to say that the discussions by Lauren and Angel_on_broomstick have also been very inspiring!

Anyway... so how can we save the world? we can start with believing that we can!

I actually wrote something that was fairly long about this, it hard to express what I mean. It just doesn't feel right for me to sign something saying that I'm against this war, when I don't have an alternate solution. And it would almost be as if I just gave up looking for the solution. Maybe I should just sign and keep my feelings to myself. However, I do support you cause passionately and I hope that perhaps you'll start something big.

A short answer..
February 13, 2003 - 01:40 AM

Antoine.

The petition is about creating an alternative. Its about asking our leaders to stop their ways of ignorance and self-interest and act for the greater good of all humanity, and change the world using peaceful means - a force more powerful than even the most awesome of armies.

Dont ever keep your feelings to yourself. But dont ever let other people represent you when it means sacrificing the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world.

Antoine, and more thoughts
February 14, 2003 - 10:54 AM

Antoione, I would be interested to read the article (?)that you have referred to. You seem to be a very passionate person, and you dove into the deep-end with your first TIG post...and I respect you for that!

I lied when I said that I did not understand why you did not sign the petition, as I have also experienced similar feelings. That is... in the past I have felt that I would rather come up with a solution be a part of a movement that apparently provides no solutions.

you said:

"It just doesn't feel right for me to sign something saying that I'm against this war, when I don't have an alternate solution."

I'm sure that all of us wish we could provide a solution, and would all rather sign our name to something entitled "solution to the problem". However... from a big picture perspective I would have to say that "Non-Violence" IS the alternative solution to "War". This is the big-picture problem facing our planet today. We cannot begin to start writing detailed policies for peaceful solutions if our goverments continue to advocate the use of primitive solutions involving the mass slaughtering of innocent people to achieve their (not so clear) goals.

Our goverments must adopt non-violence as an overriding principal of governance, before they can begin to tackle individual issues. This is what we ask.

It is a BIG ask. Especially considering that policies of non-violence means that there will be no use for weapons (for the use against as well as defence!)....which ULTIMATELY means that the U.S./along with all other countries would have to dissarm... (something that the U.N. and the U.S. already requires of countries such as Iraq and North Korea)... such a policy would have an extraordinary chain-reaction of implications on western economies (i.e. negative ones include loss of jobs in army etc, ridicule against the U.S. (and other) govt's for spending trillions of $$ on weapon systems which will never be used, and positive ones mean much more money available for spending on improving social systems/health care, international aid, improved sense of security, requirement for multi-dimensional strategies for multi-dimensional problems, a platform for equality and peace within and between nations, etc etc blah blah blah...). (to be very vague)

So...as you see...To provide a detailed proposal for an alternative solution could take a lifetime to write... and time is something we do not have, since War is currently on our doorstep...

Anyway.... This post is not an attempt to get more signitures for our petition (although that would be nice!!), but just ended up being thoughts and feelings out loud.

Any thoughts?
