Media???
February 24, 2006 - 04:05 AM

Media is something which is part of our lives no matter where we live!! With so many television channels, so much of information being thrown at us everyday...It is difficult. I want to know from people all around the globe how they perceive media? What is the scenerio of media in your respective country? And also, How has it changed your lives?

hi,
my view on media and its scenario not only in my country but across the globe is that, it is busy fabricating and creating reality....it shows you what you are not and directs you to be what it thinks you ought to be....see all the advertisemnets for that matter, all movies etc..
news, is a created reality and "fools" people - it has not only become irresponsible but is too differential, hierarchial and arrogant....actually, i have a lot to say but would restrict to this much only!!!!
but everthing about it is not that bad and i congratulate for what little it contributes in this sphere.

When it comes down to media it's up to the individual to take out the messages that are or aren't there. I'm a media studies student so I'm learning about advertising, marketing and public relations so that helps me put some sort of division of what is real and what isn't when it comes to media. We're basically media "junkies" and the only reason why we have all these tabloids, reality tv or anything else that is considered negative media is because some people are buying into that. If the people want it, then the media is going to give it to us.

Media, taking over
April 19, 2008 - 04:46 PM

Well, a lot of teenage girls in the US fall in love with movie stars or singers and Obsess over them, and quote them All the time, read magazines, scream whenever they see a picture or video that they are in and that's all they ever talk about and don't care about anything else, and i personally think it's a waste. they're admiring someone else they don't know and probably will Never meet, and are wasting their time learning ALL about them while they could be involved in something else more productive like going green and focusing on their Own talents and uniqueness and follow their Own dreams instead of watching someone else follow theirs and be a couch potato.
Media takes away from your own thoughts and uniqueness, because you try to be someone else, or someone else's perfect bf or gf, you have songs stuck in your head ALL day or playing in your ears all day from your Ipod, and don't have time for your Own thoughts if you are one of those overly obsessed fans.
Media Can be fun, but if you go too far, it can take over. Thats why Waldorf schools don't want their students to watch TV or be exposed to all the Media. Then they keep their own uniqueness and its healthy for them.

no wonder they call it the fourth state.politicians they know the importance of controlling the media.they will make you see, hear what they want you to hear.
they are shaping opinions and creating false realities unfortunately there are some people who fail to see it and they swallow everything and this is very unfortunate.
when you hear anything in the media remember the are two sides to evry story. and another myth about media is aboout the independence of the media thre is no such the government owned or private owned the owner has his publishing poplicy and this usually is to further their own agendas and jurnos are tied to that and if ever they go against that policy they get fired.
media the builder and the distroyer of nations

what media can do :
BBC coverage incites demonstrations
— AFP.
LONDON. HUNDREDS of Chinese students held demonstrations in two British cities yesterday protesting at how media outlets including the BBC have covered the run-up to the Beijing Olympics.

More than 1 000 people, mainly students, gathered outside the BBC’s offices in Manchester, north-west England, while around 300 staged a demonstration outside the Houses of Parliament in London.

Protesters in Manchester were holding a two-hour silent vigil before reading out an open letter to BBC director-general Mark Thompson accusing the broadcaster of "tarnishing and demonising China".

In both cities, they expressed concern about how the media had covered the Olympic torch relay as well as last month’s unrest in Tibet.

"I was in London...during the torch relay on April 6 and we saw thousands of students coming from all over the UK just to support the torch relay and were really excited about that," London protester Becky Qin told BBC television.

"But when I went back to Cambridge and saw the recorded version of BBC News 24, we were disappointed to see nothing about the supporting groups at all. It was as if the torch was just struggling its way through London and it was all about how people were so resentful about it."

In Nigeria the media is relatively free this is because like in all other countries the media is guided by the law. The media has given room for freedom of speech and participate in government. Though there are few cases of harrasment by the government, it is usually done with caution. However one area the media needs to be cautioned is in the number of uncensored materials that go on air. The media needs to understand that there are things should not be over looked. Issues like morals that should guide our society. Young people learn alot from what they see and hear. Daily the standard seems to be on a down slide.

Media is tho most powerfull weapon.

Without media where would we be?

Media is what makes the world go round!
Its amazing what a few sentences in a paper can convey and not to forget what your friend told you last week when he read something on a notice board, which you have passed by but didnt bother to read.

Its very significant but also misleading as it can lead you in the right direction, inform you a should but also let you astray.

AS THEY SAY IN POLITICTS IT CAN,,, MAKE YOU AND DESTROY YOU!

In the UK we are making a big effort to be critical of the media - not positively or negatively, but critically... ie thinking about it!

We are doing this through teaching children how images and words can portray a biased view - this is taught to children from very early on. Already there is evidence that they are very sceptical about advertising, for example.

If you would like to know of some interesting projects for schools (if you are a teacher) do get in touch and tell me the ages you work with - there are some great projects available that look at this topic.

I thought the coverage of the Olympic Torch was biased. Remember the protestors go to where the cameras are, but the onlookers supporting the torch are just anywhere along the streets. So it could be that the newspeople were glad to get some dramatic shots and did not explain the whole picture.

In my point of view media is like double sharp knife, what do I mean is, if it is used in the development and improving people receiving information, education and entertainments for estimating them on their scale of need it be useful? But there is misinterpret when are being talked about entertainment, there a lot of channels dominated by entertainments where meant providing people pornography films and nudity things where many young people under the legal ages or mature age could be possible watch, I had been told, in London majority of channels broadcast pornography films or may be some close things. When ever you score up and down you may find a channel broadcasting nudity things which is not good for children watch it. I read a report come out London which about girls less than ten years or one to two year older get pregnancy or became the youngest mom. See how media encouraging early child pregnancy.

Media's Influence
July 27, 2008 - 10:10 PM

I am new to this site and have recently met a couple of its creators who inspired me to join. I can only speak for what I have seen in the media in the US. I have seen that the national networks, tabloids, and other media sources have aquired a great amount of power and influence. Many of you may know of the current houseing market and the US and the decline in the econ. Ever since the media has picked up on the issue the problem has gotten worse! People will not invest in a bad market and the resulting lack of investment makes the econ. worse! now there are bigger problems in the world, but what if there were media networks totally devoted to promoting international causes and discussing real problems...not the redic. over-blown non-sense we see in so many national networks??????

One of the big differences for today's generations compared to past generations is how relatively easy it is for common people who have access to modern technologies to create media that can reach massive numbers of people in a very short period of time (e.g. video creation and sharing, photos, blogs, podcasts...). There is much potential power in the hands of many. We're all creating content right here on TIG.
