help me understand
January 14, 2003 - 11:37 AM

i was watching a programme on BBC this weeeknd about Zimbabwe and i was so depressed afterwards, depressed and angry. I'm going back home next week and i saw what i was going back to. It's not the place i left behind, it's worse a whole lot worse and i know that there is alot more that the t.v. cameras didn't capture that is the unfortunate reality of so many Zimbabaweans right now. People are starving, not in a " oh i'm hungry let me get something out of the fridge " type hunger, they are reduced to eating leaves!? leaves?! can you even begin to imagine what that must be like? going without food for days on end, living on water and tree bark. ok, that's the depressing part. What makes me angry is that poeple know this yet nothing is being done. Instead, everyone is jumping to go to war (which is also tragic, don't get me wrong) but we have a crisis here and it's getting worse but no-one seems to want to do anything about it. Why? what happened to the global community? is it because no-one will benefit from it? sorry we don't have oil or diamonds but last time i checked, people were an important resource or has that changed, sorry, i must have missed that memo so please, help me understand.

It always weird what happens in this world.... I have gone to a point where i feel people only say thinks to try and justify themselves and criticize others (I guess i am doing it know). Zimbabwe is a very clear and good example. Why?

1) EVERYONE knows that the citizens in Zimbabwe are being treated less than animals right now

2) There cries and pleas are being ignored

3) They are hungry whilst those who are supposed to be feeding them are getting fat

4) Crimes against humanity are being committed on them

5) Tooo many things are happening for a layman like myself to try and document

Yet NO ONE seems to be doing the anything to help it. Now when the patient people of Zimbabwe start to take up arms and realize they voice is voiceless because (no else has anything to benefit), they are criticized.

1) The patient people of Zimbabwe waited for elections - What did that help?

2) They waited for the international community to sit down and decide what to do - sanction where imposed on the officials yet it is the laymen in the streets who seems to have been trapped and locked restricted from traveling out of the starved nation NOT the officials.

Are those who show concern waiting to see war happen in Zimbabwe before they do anything -- or maybe just waiting for the poor country to start talking about NUKES? Every talks about how bad African countries resolve to war, well Zimbabweans are not at war - and truly their patience and understanding is being tried. What do you want them to do? Wait for another election full of rigging? Wait for retirement (which has been clearly stated that it will not happen). 85% of the people are literate but that won't bring food to the table when unemployment is at 70+%.

What do you want the patient people of Zimbabwe to do in order for those who can to intervene?

It's very sad to see the arrogance, indifference and gluttony, while that happens in our world.

Not good.

They have my prayers. My friend is the director of www.cfhi.ca and is always looking for support. It is a wonderful organization that is based upon these issues.
