Re: Questions
February 21, 2006 - 06:14 AM

Hello,
I'm a universty lecturer in communication, cultural studies and visual arts. I'm doing my PhD in intercultural communication/visual arts. It based on responses from participants from all around the world (see big blue ball project) I think I first located TIG by searching google with keywords - intercultural communication. I joined, even though I felt that I was too old (I'm 44) but I needed to access and interact with young adults on an international level and TIG has proven to be perfect! It also attracts the very best, most dedicated, most enthusiastic, and compassionate of our young people. I don't use other on-line communities as they don't provide me the same quality and commitment. I use TIG to recruit and interact with young people all around the world, primarily for my research project, but I also love to check out the global arts and artists that are represented on the site. TIG provides inspiration and it shows me the the next generation are a better 'people' globally than the last. They are less selfish and more concerned about the world around them. TIG offers me everything I need. I also recommend it continually to my students, who are international students from all around the world.

TakingITGlobal is a social network, as I see it, it is the world as youths see it. I located TIG on NetAid and since the I have changed because 'this people' has impacted on me sp greatly through access to information, connections and inspired me to take actions based on the Global thinking and local action perspective. I have been involved in this network for some good time now and has been proactive. It is really never a dull moment in TIG, I really hope TIG helps us ion Africa to achieve the Millenium Development Goals.

QUESTIONS:
1. What does TIG mean to you?

TIG means to me several things: Information, networking, knowledge, opinions.

2. How did you first learn about TIG?

I was doing a market research on youth organizations and their activities. One very knwoledgable person - Evgeny Morozov - the organizer of the Balkan Parliament, gave me TIG's address telling me i could find lot of info about various youth orgs.

3. How and why do you use TIG?

I use TIG, to take(info, knowledge, other resources) to give(info, knowledge, other resources), to share(opinions, point of view, information, ideas, thoughts), to network(with TIGers) and to stay tuned smile
4. Do you use other online communities? How and why do you use it?

I check regularly tekdi.com, gyan.org, youthlink.org and few more. I use them for same reasons, but the "yield" tends to be different from one org to another!

5. How does TIG affect your life?

Well, it makes me think again, question the unquestioned, chnage the angle of my point of view, do a paradigm shift from on a case-to-case basis, feel excited/frustrated/sad/joyful from the info/experience/knowledge seen/read/heard and much more!

6. How could TIG help you more?

Thre are certain things in whic TIG will definitely be of use for me whether with its resources or with its members.
But I will let you know on y more individual basis about this!

Hope this helps!

H.

Re: Questions
February 25, 2006 - 05:13 AM

1. I'm not sure how I found TIG but it was most likely doing a search for multi culture or ethnicity as I love culture and feel that the cultural diversity in our world is one of the most underrated qualities of our existence.
2. I use TIG purely to communicate with people all over the world and to get a truly world perspective on their views and what makes them tick, what inspires them, that's especially important to me. As I mentioned on one of my posts, not at any time in our history have we had this incredible opportunity afforded us by the internet and, specifically TIG to interract with like-minded souls all across the breadth of the earth.
4. I don't use any other communities, TIG has an endless source of feedback and community for me.
5. I have to tell you that I have been "blown away" by the sheer volume of inspiring young people in our world. Before I entered the TIG community, I honestly felt that most of the youth around the world were probably mostly complacent about what is going on. I couldn't have been more wrong ! Browsing through TIG's pages I have been so utterly impressed by our youth. One girl from Australia said that she would gladly give her life if 1...3...5...or 100 others from 3rd world countries could live the life she has lived in Australia! What incredibly powerful words. I have been humbled by so many of these young people. Being a "youngster" of 57 myself it has given me hope for the future of our world and I hope, in some way to use my expertise in audio and video to help some of these young people realize their goals.
6.The TIG website is quite astounding and seems to cover just about everything. I would like to see copies of the emails I have sent. It's possible that I just haven't figured out how to do that yet. Apart from that, I can't think of anything at the moment.

Re: Questions
February 25, 2006 - 05:33 AM

1. What does TIG mean to you?

As corny as it may seem TIG is a bit of a global get away - I can confidently say that i'm pretty aware whats going on in my country- but TIG gives me the opportunity to find out what it is like to live in any other country - and whats going on - I can share ideas - learn alot - and its just a great environment

2. How did you first learn about TIG?

I think I googled young people internationally - or something along those lines and that appeared. - been a member so long can't remember

3. How and why do you use TIG?
I use PM and also the forums - its a form of making friends - and particularly learning about different cultures - which is the main thing I have learnt from TIG about other countries - some of which before TIG I had never heard of!

4. Do you use other online communities? How and why do you use it?

Yup I do - more to learn - and its a bit of a think tank. A place where I can share my ideas - and people can tell me whats good and whats not - which helps me develop as a global/local citizen

5. How does TIG affect your life?

It makes me more considerate of what I have, whats good in my life - and it also has given me about 40 friends from around the world which is truly awesome! It develops me as a person!

6. How could TIG help you more?
I would like the forums to be a bit more user friendly - and perhaps a greater understanding of some of the topics in the forum - being younger they tend to confuse me - but i like to contribute as much as I can too - so its kinda hard...
And more ways on how I a 17 year old girl can actually make a difference - other than talk about it!

Hugh - I hope this makes sense and helps - any thing else lemme know!

Take care

A question as to wheather this site has the capabily too...
February 27, 2006 - 03:41 AM

A question as to wheather this site is able to help me get my own web page for my community at my college. It's for an engineering club and a science club mixture.
Does this site help with making a web site with message boards chat rooms and communitcation purposes. that stuff?

I think the best for you is to create a project profile and through it you can have an E-group (TIG Group), a discussion board for your project, photo album and post events related to your club and link them to the project page, all that is for free.

Your Questions answered
February 27, 2006 - 09:38 AM

QUESTIONS:
1. What does TIG mean to you?
2. How did you first learn about TIG?
3. How and why do you use TIG?
4. Do you use other online communities? How and why do you use it?
5. How does TIG affect your life?
6. How could TIG help you more?

1. TIG is my Gateway to the GLOBAL community, where I can sit at home and get involved into so many projects accross the globe. I air my views and get to know what other people across the world feel about same issues. I learn alot from others and also educate others about my immediate community. With TIG, I travel round the world everyday. I have friends across the world who care about me and I care about others too. It is to me the perfect place to be for networking of ideas!

2. Afriend introduced me, when we were thinking of launching a Youth-led innitiative that would have participation of all the youth across Nigeria. He was already a member and he made me to join.

3. In TIG, i join discussion forums and make my own contributions in respect of issues that are of interest to me. I also look up the people online, check their profiles and write to those who have very interesting things on their profiles that catch my interest. I make friends that way. I also look up the Database of organizatgions and see if their aspirations represents mine and I join. I also visit financial resources and see what is going on around the world that I could apply for to attend.
I do all these because they are means by which I can keep tab of recent occurences, air my views, make friends who have similar interests and improve my knowledge in conferences that relate to my intersts.

4. I also use Hi5.com, sms.ac and meetnigerians.net,I do this by writting mails, sms and making phone conversations, to make friends and discuss matters of interest that would benefit me and my immediate community.

5. TIG affects my life Positively. I have made so many friends here, I know about so many cultures here, I have been opportuned to attend international conferences here as a result of information obtained first here. Besides, I have been able to educate many people accross the globe on the negative impressions they use to hold about Nigeria, which was false.

6. I expect TIG to help me more by launching an online chatroom similar to the one operated by Hi5, yahoomessenger etc so that one would have onlimited access to discuss with friends and others online. that way, one would not need to wait for responses from his/her friends like is the case now.

Re: Questions

1. What does TIG mean to you?

Taking information technologies globally. I would better say giving most of the essential(ideas, resouces, help, actions, knowledge, connections and a many, many, other) things to the world to the future generation. You know guys there are many chats, blogs, different kinds of youth related sites but TIG was, is and becoming the ONE that is different, that is unique, that is valuable and the lovely one.

2. How did you first learn about TIG?

So the first time was in 2004. I was just looking for the event. I was going to publish my research results and was looking for the conference. So later I became the member of TIG and got involved to it.

3. How and why do you use TIG?

You know guys TIG is the warmest place to be. Everytime when I have free time or I have internet access I am here, because TIG has many things. The place where U can find the ideas of the people from different cultures, U can express your own ideas. See the best works, the best pictures from every part of the world, have more than 105 820 even increasing number of friends.

There are so many web sites and most of them trying to involve youth(in different ways). But anyway every could not have success without great staff, great team. TIG would not be such without such a great TIGers. Thanks to everyone for being, for doing these.

4. Do you use other online communities? How and why do you use it?

Only that is adviced by TIG. Currently I am in www.oxfam.org to participate in online youth forum about MDGs and www.iearn.org

5. How does TIG affect your life?

TIG showed me the world, changed my mind, gave me a lot of positive and I hope TIG would play a great role in the future too.

6. How could TIG help you more?

Just be the same.

Success to TIG and TIGers. @Viva TIG@

Taking IT Global
February 28, 2006 - 04:37 AM

This is one of the MOST informative website i have ever come across. One UNFORTUNATE thing is that some people misuse it and dont take things seriously and use it to there BEST of ablities.
What does TIG mean to me?
A youth oriented global village that allows me to get any youth orieneted THING at any time and place,it means making friends ,it means having to research and to network.MOST of my life is CENTERED on a daily basis on the TIG site!
How did you first learn about TIG?
A friend just sent me the first ever version as an e-mail and from that time on i am in LOVE WITH TIG!Thanks to Jeniffer Corriero and Nick Moritus(I hope i have the spellings right). They had a BIG dream for US!
How and why do you use TIG?
This is the only search ingine apart from Google that i trust and love(by the way google is boring!)TIG keeps you glued to the seat!I have to always update my projects ,see who is doing what and when, have my network of friends and organisation,i do and learn so so so much from this site its just UNBELIVEABLE!
Do you use other online communities?
I no of no other online communities i would only be able to answer that if i came across one thats as GOOD as TIG till then The ANSWER IS A CAPITAL "NO"
How does TIG affect your life?
I mean its the sites of sites!personally i belive TIG has been able to create for some 3000 youths in my rural area employment, its been the instrument that helps us run projects ,develope networks, and forge the way forward to anything we need to put into place as youths!
How could TIG help you more?
If i do get the fundig, which i am praying i do i plan to USE an upcoming HIV/AIDS conference in Toronto Canada to try and make sense to the TIG staff to make sure they open up an EAst African Buruea Office where we can Easily have access and make sure Inforamation Technology is taken now to the rural areas.Would you belive it that there are some African children who still dont even know what a monitor or a Keyboard is?Yes thats how serious it is so you can see there is still so so so so much that TIG has to do but doing it from Canada is quite difficult.I usually say "Give a man fish,he will eat for a DAY:Teach him how to fish he will eat for life! They have taught and TIG has Done it but others need this help just like me!TIG is Breath taking, its soul searching,mind-boggling,Awesome,Nerve-Wrecking its the M.O.A.S(Mother of ALL Sites)Ilove TIG thanks to IT i am who i am TODAY!
