Abbas has earned my great respect in recent months - I think the Israelis should have supported him more before the election - it was a big mistake.
I understand the Israelis don't see him as really being able to negotiate because he doesn't really have control of the govenrment -
BUT I think they should take him up on the negotiation - his offer to find a peace deal under the supervision of the big 4.
They should take him up on it and then let him take the solution directly to the Palestinians in a refferendum - screw Hamas.
And the US should lean on the Israelis to talk to directly to him.
I was also very heartened to see Abbas veto the Hamas appointment of a known terrorist to run the security services as this would have sharply escalated things.
my point in showing the article to you was to point out how Hamas is looking to make trouble in a number of different directions - and I hope Abbas has a crack security detail around him.
Yes, I agree with you! I think Israel thinks Abbas cannot do much against Hamas. But it vowed tosupport strictly diplomatic contacts with Abbas before and I hope these diplomatic links would grow into something moretangible to make possible some kind of collaboration between Israel and Abbas, hoping that Hamas will join and otherwise dont considering it, that will finally put Palestinian people into a more desirable line of peaceful developments!

The latest HK hottest short movie, "Bus Uncle", is reality TV in hong kong style! It stirring up controversy portraying the stress problem in HK. A young gentleman want to tell the man in front row low his voice then trigger a confrontation on the upper deck of a public bus. The verbal abuse was taken for six minutes. The Hong Kong version of Michael Douglas’ "Falling Down"
This was surreptitiously recorded by a fellow passenger, no doubt using 3G technology! Now affectionately known as bus uncle, the man has achieved fame/notoriety in hongkong. In a way, he is a terrorist more fearsome than Osama. Since then, the uncle's voice has been turned into rap music, dance and karaoke remixes.

I'd rather wait and see whether Abbas's thrown gauntlet will be taken up or not. He vetoed, yes, but what shall the response be?
It would be interesting to see if Hamas would not only appoint a person with a 'cleaner' image, but accept Israel as a necessary evil as middle pathway for the sake of the Palestinian people. We must keep in mind that violent or no, Hamas is actually people-centric, which is why it won the election.
""Approximately 90 percent of its work is in social, welfare, cultural, and educational activities," writes the Israeli scholar Reuven Paz."

But frankly I think it is these left wing academics which lack understanding - they are simply naive - and they cannot recognise sexist, racist, violent, facists for what they are.
Or, perhaps, their understanding goes more in depth than simple labels. It's not enough to recognise that al-qaida is sexist, violent, fascist ...etc etc. Anyone with half a brain can do that, I'll bet even al-qaida themselves. It's not enough to call someone a terrorist and walk away (or blast them to pieces). The more important questions to ask includes why and how. And that is what these 'naive' academics who try and rationalise the issues are attempting to answer.
