Media Sucks
February 1, 2006 - 05:36 AM

I am sure that without the media, the world would not rotate round its own axis and life will stop. This is just in recognition of the major role that the media plays in our lives today.

But the truth is, MEDIA SUCKS. I have had a bone to pick with the recent news in Kenya of a woman who intends to donate "dog food" to starving Kenyan children. THe media did its best at blowing the issue of dog food out of proportion without enlightening the people how the food will be manufactured.

THe fact that the woman's company manufactures dog food doesnt mean that she cant manufacture food fit for human consumption. I saw this as misrepresentation of facts and is going against the main purpose that the media is to play, informing people objectively.

people,

firs of all i dont agree completely with you.

Noone should say media sucks like that cause its a gross over exaggeration and while it applies to many sources there are exceptions...

Secondly media is the way to get news through.. So any clever person knwoing the existing bias of the media can seek for more and in other independent sources and reconstruct the truth.. But for that one needs to know that media is not to be believed blindly..

Thirdly its up to us to interpret the data by eliminating the political "creme" or overhead put by or imposed y governments, parties, etc. Again, every interested and possesing bit of intelligence person can do it..

And lastly imagine there is no TV, no radio, no magazines and newspapers.. i wonder how would you get news then....

Cheers,
H.

Hello Noor(this is your name, right?)!

Media, in its very defitnition, like history of any country taught in that country, is implying a "not detachable" bias. Things are being presented in a special way, "the most convenient way" for that country(politics, economy, crisis, etc).

It's in its very DNA this bias. You cannot get rid of it easily. In the US, morethen anywhere else, in certain domains and aspects, this bias is wide-spread. That explains why many Americans have a very certain point of view on different issues, especially historical and political, in the world.

That's the way it is and there is nothing one can do about it but to get around this problem as I mentionned above(my personal opinion of it)!

Cheers,
H.

Hello everyone,
This is an ongoing debate in every country these days. The truth is that media needs to be much more responsible in what they print and what they show. After all, its something which affects people globally. Unfortunately we see so many information coming our way but most of the times we dont know relevant details. I feel they should get more informative rather than just creating hype about trial issues. It definately does need a watchdog!!

I'm not a pro at debates, but I'll throw my two cents in the opinion media is corrupt in completing stories satisfactory for every person, if every persons expectation of media is to be perfect. It is human nature to take on more than what we can handle. Though when we think about it our communities are expanding rapidly. Among other things so is the need for diverse access for content. Our wants and needs are different in other locations. The market compensates by being convienient to the majority of the masses. Knowing pleasing everyone is no different from completing the quest for Shangrila. On top of this is competition among peers for notoriety. The coverage of media shifts it's focus from informative to a "I got there first" or "I'm better than the other content provider" mode. The importance of media in each of our daily lives becomes even more important and complex as we gain more control over daily governance. Our cries for accountabily of government has reopened the once thought fabled Pandora's Box. It's an all or nothing package.
Of all networks the Fight Network has it right I think. They have a public content advisory notice before and after each commercial break, before resumming the regular schedule program.
"You're about to see some people puching, kicking and grappling each other. If this is not what you want to see or it offends you, please...

Don't Watch Our Channel!!"

It's up to us as responsible individuals to pick out the good, the bad and the downright trashy contents and apply them accordingly.
