Ten tips for better health
January 23, 2006 - 12:34 PM

Dennis Raphael at York University (based on the ideas of D. Gordon - University of Bristol) compiled the following two lists of tips for better health. The first is based on traditional Western concepts of health. The second list is based on a Social Determinants of Health concept of health. Research shows that being wealthy or poor has a much bigger impact on health outcomes than whether you smoke or not, eat healthy or not, etc. What do YOU think of these?

The traditional ten tips for better health

1. Don’t smoke. If you can, stop. If you can’t, cut down.
2. Follow a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
3. Keep physically active.
4. Manage stress by, for example, talking things through and making time to relax.
5. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
6. Cover up in the sun, and protect children from sunburn.
7. Practice safer sex.
8. Take up cancer screening opportunities.
9. Be safe on the roads: follow the Highway Code.
10. Learn the First Aid ABCs: airways, breathing, circulation.

The social determinants ten tips for better health

1. Don’t be poor. If you can, stop. If you can’t, try not to be poor for long.
2. Don’t have poor parents.
3. Own a car.
4. Don’t work in a stressful, low paid manual job.
5. Don’t live in damp, low quality housing.
6. Be able to afford to go on a foreign holiday and sunbathe.
7. Practice not losing your job and don’t become unemployed.
8. Take up all benefits you are entitled to, if you are unemployed, retired or sick or disabled.
9. Don’t live next to a busy road or near a polluting factory.
10. Learn how to fill in the complex housing benefit/asylum application forms before you become homeless and destitute.

I would add here one point advised by Leonardo Da Vinci in one of his manuscripts on a healthy way of life:

- Standing some time after consuming of a food, meaning not to sit down but rather keep a standing position(whether walking on just standstill) and by doing so not constrining the stomach into a stool position while seated!

I did stand a couple of times and I think its easier to digest and your stomach feels better when you stand at least 15 minutes after eating and then go about your business!

Cheers,
H.

Nicely done.

Well said indeed because I believe that prevention is way better than cure. It costs less to prevent any diseases than to cure it really. Preventions should be our watch word as individuals and as a nation. Once again, great posting.
I also want to add that drinking lots of water is good for your body especially in the morning. Other liquids should not be used in place of water.

My Own Top Ten

I may not be perfect... but I see these things very helpful to me.

1. Enough Sleep. The best way to recharge.
2. Drink Lots of Water and Other Helpful Fluids. Rehydrate... just drink.
3. Choose Food Combination. There are NO junk food, only a junk diet. Chips, alcohol and chocolates won't hurt if taken in moderated quantities. Plus extra serving of veggies and fruits won't hurt either.
3. Be active and move around. If you got time to go to the gym, then go and trim down. You can also do unconventional exercises like cleaning your room, walking (instead of hopping a bus when it's just a few blocks away), etc.
4. Wash your Hands and a Take Bath. This might sound so pre-K, but hey, cleanliness will keep those germs away.
5. Take a Break. Periods of time infront of the computer can really be dragging. Just take time to stand up from your seat and walk around your workstation.

... the other 5... on my next post.

6. Try to stay away from pollution (if you can)
7. Drink moderately. Alcohol is okay but should not be taken excessively.
8. Don't stay out in the sun for hours. SKIN CANCER, is not cool... *wink*
9. Be social. Nothing beats chit-chat and touch therapy from your loved ones.
10. Stay HAPPY! Be optimistic and give out that big grin to everyone.

the social determinants

The other one ( social conditions) is quite pessimistic...meaning- if you don't have a car, or your parents are poor, you should get rid of the circumstance! Sometimes you just have to live with these! Think about how many people have to do a low-paid stressful job..just so that we could buy those Nikes at a cheaper price...I mean I am not pro-poverty or pro lack of nice things, but the list should be done in a less humiliating ( for those who don't have) way...Thanks...

I don't really get the 7th point on the list: Practice safer sex. Safer than what?? Than no protection at all? Double Dutch is safe enough, isn't it? wink
And I really don't understand how owning a car can improve your health! I still prefer public transport, my bike and my feet...

Being healthy is important- that's a given. However, the majority of the health tips that I read in magazines, newspapers, online, etc. are NEARLY IDENTICAL.

Does anyone find that the same ideas are constantly repeated? Is this a bad thing, though? With huge proportions of the world living unhealthy lifestyles, perhaps this repetition is and/or could make an impact.

Also, recommendations given are typically common sense, to me, at least - though I respect that they're not to others.

You're right. All the tips are identical. I don't know if repeating it all he time makes an impact. After a while it becomes so boring to hear for the zillionth time that you should drink 2 litres of water and eat 2 pieces of fruit every day... And honestly, as long as I am in shape I really don't care about what I eat as long as it keeps me slim....

There are good tips on how to maintain your health in this thread. What I would like to add is about diet. smileAlways eat fruits and vegetables on an empty stomach! smileUntil I did not know this, I had always felt horrible when I ate fruits and vegetables after lunch, and didn't know why. Then I read a book and tried the new method. It works. Your stomach can digest the fruits and vegetables quickly and easily if you haven't eaten anything before them, and thus more of the minerals and vitamins can get into your circulation, which truly revitalizes you. They also have the effect of cleaning your body inside when they are eaten before and not after main meals.

Hanging around other people who are healthy can really help too. I notice if I am with my friends that play video games and do the whole DVD thing all the time I don't feel as good because I am not getting as much exercise. When I hang out with my friends who are more into sports I feel a little better.

this resonates with me because all of the determinants of health are, as the original post implies, out of the hands of those who need them most. People living in poverty often turn to the most inexpensive food or activiity, etc. So that often means preservative filled "fast" type foods that don't offer alot of good nutrition, and sedentary activities. As a result, in the western world, people living in poverty are more likely to be overweight or struggling with health problems such as diabetes or high cholesterol

Speaking of water, some therapies - such as Gerson therapy - advise of drinking organic juices instead of water.

I might add to the list:

1- Drink a cup of honey before you eat or drink anything in the morning (stir one spoon of pure honey in a warm cup of water).
2- Make olive oil part of your daily diet ( a great fighter against cancer)
3- Drink a cup of ginger once a day
4- Eat one apple in the morning and one apple in the evening
5- Don't drink alchohol..it is your liver's worst enemy
6- Help your stomach when you eat by making 1/3 of it composed of food, 1/3 of it liquid, and 1/3 of it air.
7- Walk, walk and walk
8- Take a shower at least once per day
9- Eat very light meal 2 hours before you go to sleep
10- Don't eat meat during 5 days of the week

The tips for better health are very "key". The tips i consider key is driking of waterand exercise
i recomend taking a cup of water in the morning. it helps amonst other things to wash and clense the system.
I suggest you do a 5-10 minutes exercise in the morning, and some few minutes before going to bed.
