Arab Immigrants in USA Arrested/Detained for Registration

On Thursday I read incredibly shocking news stories about the arrest and detaining of thousands of Arab immigrants in the USA. It seems to me this was done in preparation for a US-Iraqi war. Perhaps it was not, but at any rate it reminded me of the internment of Japanese-Americans in WWII and the Nazi Germany roundup of Jews before taking them to concentration death camps. It was apaprently an alien registration edict from the US government, but done in such a shocking manner:http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20021219/ts_nm/attack_immigration_dc_6
Only Armenians did not get subjected to the http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20021219/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/registering_aliens_1.
As of today, the immigrants have been http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20021221/ts_nm/attack_immigration_dc_1.
Are most people here in TIG aware of this? Did this news reach around the world or was it pretty much contained in US news as a footnote?
I wonder how many college students were caught up in this?
Any thoughts on this situation?

I just read the article & that is dispicable; a complete infringment on human rights! It reminds me of something that would happen right after Sept. 11, but what is the reason for that behaviour now? I don't personally see how it is preparing for a U.S.-Iraqi war...that is really quite unfortunate.

As fascist and racist as the American government (as a whole) is, that article did not suprise me. One of my good friends from Sri Lanka has to register under the same new INS regulations...
Here is another bit of upseting news: people from south-asian and middle eastern countries, as well as some African countries, who come to the U.S. as foreign students must now submit their personal information to the INS to have it published openly ONLINE. As part of the Homeland 'IN'-Security Act, this is justified to 'protect' immigrants who might be the target of hate crimes... so that people can go look up those who might be a 'target' in their area and lovingly watch out for them.
Or might some trigger happy rednecks loop up the information and USE THAT for a hate crime? Gee.. I wonder what's more motivating. Sadly.

I had to leave my university in USA because of this. I'm a Muslim Arab, this never happened to me but I saw it happen to other Arabs, and take my word for it,they were treated as if they were all terrorists. I did everything in my ability to get to this university where I was studying, and guess what? my future is now screwed,I don't think I even have one. Thanks to USA, the country that doesn't discriminate.

Can you clarify?

I am sad to hear this.
I also must ask if you can clarify what exactly happened that you were unable to remain a student at the university where you were and what university was it? Was there a problem with something administrative and the detainments caused you to have to leave? You said you saw it happen but it did not happen to you. Why then, did you need to leave your univeristy? If you could explain it more clearly it would help us to understand at least ONE person's situation in all this.

I think you've all heard me say this before: The United States disgusts me. My own country, that I am supposed to love. And TRUST. Well, I guess I was even more wrong than I thought. Really, I shouldn't even be surprised anymore, since every single day I am finding out the truth to another lie the government hands us. I shouldn't even trust it at all anymore.
You are so right. America is supposed to be the land of the free. The home of the brave. Over the last few months, I've learned that it's the home of the hateful lying cowards we call our politicians. And then there's the general public, who doesn't even know what's going on. Thanks to America's filthy government!
I am ashamed to live in America.
No one should be forced to have their rights removed from them. In any way at all.
&!$#%@!!!
Why people feel the need to persecute others, I don't know. It doesn't matter whether we're on the verge of war or not, just because that idiot Bush wants to drop some nuclear paraphernalia on Saddam doesn't mean that his cronies are allowed to detain innocent people! This is a federal abuse of power! I don't see why they have to be suspicious of foreigners, after all, we are all human, no matter what country we come from! We all have the same rights, no matter what our 'race' or religion: I couldn't care less whether someone was Christian or Muslim or worshipped a polka-dot flamingo! No matter what we believe, we are first and foremost humans, and should treat each other with the dignity and respect everyone deserves.
*Mike* I'm thinking that I, too, need to be burning a flag. ugh.I would do anything right now to get out of America!

nono. dont leave. not yet anyway.
More good comes of people working within the broken system to fix it than can ever come out of foreign influences wanting change.
Gandhi was right: 'be the change.'
So as much as I want to see more people like you in Australia, there is still time to stop more Americans being afraid of what they dont understand.
Courage is needed now more than ever.
And I know you can be brave.

I want to help my country change, and I know its going to be hard. You're right we need to begin to understand what's going on around us. I want to do my best to help teach other people, but I don't know if I'm capable of it. I hope so. I can put up a strong face in the midst of destruction, but already its starting to break me down inside.
