Children Victims of Religion???
January 19, 2006 - 08:39 AM

I have a major problem...Two nights ago my 8 yr. old daughter commented on a Barbara Walters' TV Special that she saw about Religion. I saw bits and pieces of it.
To make a long story short she has begged me not to be Muslim anymore because, "they kill people". In the TV special one of the young men said that he believed that "everyone who's not Muslim will go to hell". She was quite disturbed by this statement because she knows alot of people who are not Muslim. Does anyone out there know how to address this issue with a child? She has most recently started to take an interest in politics/world issues ecetera so she's very observant and sensitive to these issues. The fact is that she lives amongst thousand of people who look different and have diverse customs and religions. I don't want to raise an ignorant child, nor do I want to raise one who's afraid for her life. And it bothers me because she has also witnessed the prejudice that (some) Muslims face. If you have any thoughts or suggestions let me know. All I ask that you keep an open mind, I'm not looking for posts that are going to further attack Islam.

I think children should not be allowed to watch TV especially news and any sensitive info about religion unheeded, meaning parents have to explain their children and interpret what children see and dont understand.

Media and press play the game of feeding on fears, excitation as well as other negative and positive feelings of spectators.. especially nowadays media and press are mostly manipulated for political, economical and religoius reasons.
and THERE IS NO ESCAPE to it..

The only solution is to carefully explain children what is what and who is who and making them have a second thought and developing this habit of not believeing everything on TV and newspapers.. but seeking the truth in other more reliable and objective sources...

Hey shelanda , well it's really a problem but the most important thing is to treat your child as someone who really understand things and to tell her the truth ,children are very smart and as mnopq said you should tell her that not everything she hears or sees in the TV is true and tell her that there are good ppl and bad ppl in any religion and good luck in raising her smile bcoz kids need alot of atention and care

Thanks so much for your insight guys...It's definetly a wake up call for me right now.Having to answer certain questions, has also made me see the vulnerability in children and how adults are able to further exploit their innocence.
