In your country (city) , which holiday is the biggest in a year?
January 19, 2006 - 08:24 AM

In Viet Nam, there will be the biggest holiday,in next days, I’ll tell you something about it
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lunar new year is also known as Spring Festival and is oldest and most important festivel in Asian Country
The date of the new year is determined by lunar rather than the solar westenr calendar, so the date of holiday varies from lates January to mid february
In 2006 juanuary 29 marks the start of the year of the dog
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Viet Namese new year
Viet nam has many traditional and religious holidays but none can be compared to New year festival..called TET NGUYEN DAN,or in short Tet, which may fall in late January or early febuary ( this year, 29th of January)
The signs of the holiday show up a month before Tet.many stores are built to sell holiday items such as New year’s greeting card, candied fruits and decorations.Prices for everything begin to rise.Houses and buildings get a coat of new piant. People buy new clothes, exchange greeting cards, wish Happy new year to each others. we also buy flowers and ornamental tree to display on New Year days, especially the apricot ( the south of Viet Nam), peach-blossom ( the Noth of Viet Nam)
Some families also paste up strips of red paper ( ‘Red couplets’- these are chinese good luck sayings )with saying of the wealth, happiness, Prosperity, and longevity. Families gather making the traditional BANH CHUNG, the square-shaped sticky rice cake.
On the morning of the New Year’s day, everybody puts on new clothes and joyfully greets each other happy New year.Children give many best wishes to the adult ( parents, relatives, or visitors),the adults in return give children money in a red envelop.
People will visit the most important persons to us on the first day, and the less important ones on the second and the third days. The first visitor of the year to a house is the most significant, being the coming year’s fortune. Usually, visitors are served fruits and candies and dried watermelon seeds.Tet is also an opprtunity for people to visit pagodas, churches, friends, neighbourhood, and relatives
Licorn dance is a joyful entertainment at the Tet festival in Viet nam. The Licorn is the symbol of power and presperity.Wealthy families used to set prize money to invite the licorn dance team to come and dance in front of their houses and stores

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We(students) have many days of rest (14days) to leave university for home to spend New year days with family.

Thanks for talking about the holiday Tet. The holiday festivities sound really great - like the dancing and the serving visitors fruits and candies and dried watermelon seeds. It makes me miss the holiday season (which is centred around Christmas and New Year's in the West). My favorite time of year in Canada (wherever city i'm in) is seasonal, and not necessarily holiday-oriented. I love summer and fall especially.

Pravin
i dont know on what criteria you have short listed these festivals as the biggest festivals in INdia.
i don't think we can ever short list any festival as the biggest festival in India!!!!!!!
each festival is "big" here, with the entire population on the streets on every occasion!!!

As you have rightly said India is a 'land of festivals', every festival here becomes a reason to celebrate for all. we also seem to having the most number of public holidays.

Hello friends,

Thanks for ur info,
I am from India, the land of festivals. The biggest festival in my state is Sankranthi. It is celebrated after the first harvest.Kites are flown. There would be competitions in kite flying, and its a real fun.
The other big festivals are Diwali and dusshera.
Deepavali or diwali is the festival of crackers where we worship goddess of wealth and fire crackers in the night.

Enjoy ur festivals.
Bye

ya u r right anu, i was just talking abt the festivals in andhrapradesh, we indians have a penchant to celebrate life, so every festival is a reason to celebrate life. And probably that is a reason to be taken care of, because too much celebration may not help.

Why don't we share all the story about our culture?
I intend to make a new poll on traditional custom but when I read this one, I was happy because a Vietnamese has already made one.
I just want to say that in many countries, especially in Vietnam, the tradition is losing, teenagers seem to pay no attention on this. Just imagine, what will happen in 100 years later? No traditional and all countries will be alike. I don't want that happens.
