With Kofi Annan's term as Secretary General of the United Nations expiring on 31 December 2006 who do you think is the best candidate to replace him?

I have no idea of current candidates but i know one thing:
anyone eligible to REVAMP and REDISCOVER the UN nature will be good enough.. UN is getting more and mroe stagnant envelloped by its many layers of bureacracy and artificial barriers to anything creative.. Ideas and actions are stopped half way born...no to mention fostering corruption and greed..
I am going to give you one very personal opinion here: Un did and does lot of good things in the world but it blundered a lot in past and i think one of several reaons of Arabo-Israeli conflict is UN, by refusig to act when needed...

well,no candidates in mind at the moment,Kofi Annan has done a good job,if there are any basic requirements, these are really clear in my mind:
no man is perfect for this position, but he/she,at least, should be a person of willingness to take the world as a entity, and UN as an organization for the human kind, which can effectively protect and empower humanbeing as individuals and communities as well...
of course, he/she should also be a person who is willing and ready to continue the reform in UN to make it effective in action and better for the whole world...

point is that UN is not "a discarded issue" but in my opinion it has to be re-invented.
as DanHerman mentionned it doesn lot of good thing, especially concerning humanitarian aids in Sierra-Leone, Niger, Liberia together with UN Volunteers activities, it has much more obscure sides..
Firstly its own invented bureacratic system from top-down is alsmost non-functional in sense of not promoting innovative ideas and hinders in general the idea shring amongst and between different parts of UN and its affiliate orgs..
Secondly, UN as any other hug organization is not deprived of corruption, one of "bright" examples and for that matter the DISCOVERED one(cause i m sure there are more but better concealed so far) is the Oil-for-food program in IRAQ..
I will not even talk about how Kofi Anna's own son was embroiled in certain machinations... and notwithstanding to mention UN's security/peace meusures around Arabo-Israeli conflict....and the last thing i would like to talk is of UN's "intervention" in the recent Iraq invasion and so on...
UN is like a dinasaur that needs to be healed, or like a huge but stagnated company that needs to be reinvented! The idea of UN is a very good one but the current and recetn implementations lack...

UN,a ghost

Well, this is atleast something to talk about but certainly not to think about cos the UN has now been undersiege and just a mere watchdog for western interest. It fails complletely to provide the services which it was designed to offer and even less as serving purposes which are vehemently contrary to its so called policies.Personally the issue of UN is a discarded issue. So wether it is Kofi or any other man i assure the west will not allow him any chance that will threaten their interest worldwide.

I disagree completely. While there is indeed much talk, and it is much needed, about the need to reform several of the UNs processes you need only look at the role of the UN in West Africa (Sierra Leone, Liberia) to see why it is an increasingly important body. Yes, the US can hijack the UNs policies, but it cannot render it completely impotent.
And as the number of UN Mission's in growing, in both number and absolute size, and the MDGs need propping up, the next SG will be one of the most important people on the planet.

whatever its drawbacks , UN is, at the moment, the only agency with a postion to change the world for good. What it requires is a strong administrator( who is also sensitive to global issues).
This time there is also a talk going on for a female successor; Gro Harlem Brundtland, formerly Norway's prime minister and head of the World Health Organization; New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark; and Thoraya Obaid, the Saudi woman who runs the UN Population Fund, appear to be in the race.
Also it has been 34 years since an Asian occupied this post. its about time that the seat goes to somebody from this continent!

Hey Anu!
As you said, UN is the only agency with a position to chnage the world. But because exactly of this and being conscious of the fact that this is the only agnecy powerful enough to have enough leverage to change the world it may or may not be able to do so depending on its embraced policy!
As it says in "Spiderman", "Great power implies great responsibility", and if UN fails to act in a more appropriate way than it did recently, I am not sure whether the negative impact will not exceed the positive impact in the wake of its future undertakings!
Cheers,
H.

" WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY"
Hey Hayk,
That is one quote i always truly believe in. i think somebody should bring it to the notice of our leaders.Actually a few could put that quote on their desks as a reminder.
And yes UN has been taken for a ride many a times during the past years, still there is no alternative to it,is there? And there shouldn't be.
I think UN has enough agencies to review its own policies but the point is that at the moment UN has many loopholes which has time and again been used to over ride the policy of COLLECTIVE CONSENSUS( which nowadays seem to be non-existent).
I do want to believe that it won't turn into another 'league of nations'. And for that we do need some strong and sensitive leader who can not only talk the talk but also walk the walk!
hey Umop2002,
If the decision taken hurts someone as it did the Iraqi people then i think there is no point in having an organisation like UN. What happened in Iraq actually makes a mockery of the whole instituition. there were definitely better and peaceful ways to bring a change. the whole point in having UN is to avoid conflicts and War through diplomacy. War should never be an option in the future!
Regards,
Anu

" WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY" - Stan Lee
hey guys, I had to jump in here cause your quoting my mentor - Stan Lee, I worked for him right out of college - he still a good friend - he created Spidy and he has that phrase on a little plaque on his desk ; )
He will be happy to know people are quoting him in debates like this - maybe I'll tell him next time I see him.
anyway - this is of course an important issue.
initially I thought this would be a good role for Bill Clinton - but ultimately I think the UN should be headed by someone from the developing world - not the developed world - simply an issue of a balance of power - all the veto's are basically from the developed world as it is.
As to specifically WHO - I think it should not be a naitonalist - someone loyal to any nation in particular.
A Nobel Peace prize winner would be perfect - but they also MUST understand how to administer a large organization - as efficiency, the ability to balance a budget and simply supervise alot of personell are essentials in this job.

live beyond individuals

The Un should live beyond seeing a leader in one individual.Leadership should be seen as a service and as the Un, service to the world. The person chosen should be one who can stand firm on a decision that may hurt some. These ae the challenges a UN head should be prepared to embrace.Any one can be a leader so long as he or she is tested, tried and proved capable.Thats what i think.

Tharoor made a wise choice. He should not waste his time in a toothless organisation when he can contribute more with his writing. Nor should he work for someone less capable than he.
