TIG Discussion Board improvements
January 6, 2006 - 05:35 AM

Are there any technical features you would like to see added to the discussion boards?
Have any suggestions for the way the discussion boards should look?

TIG will soon be in the process of re-engineering our discussion boards system.
Feel free to reply with any ideas and we will do our best to consider them in our technical enhancements!

The Ramadan discussion has been open for a long time now. I tried to email you to inform you of this, but unfortunately the email address you provided in your profile is incorrect. Please update your profile and put in a valid email address so that we are able to contact you in the future.

Also, thank you very much for your other suggestions. We will be sure to consider them for our discussion board re-design.

peace

Dear TIG,

I thought of several thingsi would like to see chnaged but now 2 come to my mind.

I think it would be a good idea to introduce a so-called "member ranking" system whereupon you rank every TIG member accordint to two dimensions: his/her activity on boards(according to certain criteria) and veracity and amount of info contained in his/her messages. Now this might seem difficult and in case it does you can perhaps start by some easier version of ranking members and then elaborate.

The idea is not only to "give credit" to good ones but also "to get rid" of passive ones, who never participate. Although equality in many case is preferable i think in this case putting a measuring "ladder" would be better.
This will also stimulate TIG members "to grow" in sense of psting more and better contents!
But again its up to you to decide!

And if you decide upon this issue and the responsible assigning to each board/adding more responsibilities to moderator roles, these two would go hand-in-hand having for exmaple "moderators" or "responsables" of boards evaluating members posting in their boards, amon other things!

Second point was more of techincal nature. I would prefer not only to see who is online when i go to the main page of TIG before logging in(and isthere anywhere else that i can click to see who i online after i have logged in), but i would prefer to see who is logged on the main page of boards(seems easier) or when i go into particular board(say Education) and i see who is online, but in this case it will the person who is browsing that board(in this case Education) or writng a message. The idea of latter is basically to find out who is where you are! The idea of former is to know in general who is logged in into TIG system.

will be back to you when remeber what else i forgot smile

Cheers,
H.

Thanks for the comments mnopq!

There already exists somewhat of an activity level rank of TIG members, but it is currently used for internal purposes. Using the system to qualify different members (by their level of activity) is one that we may consider in the future. The good news is that we are currently working on the possibility of implementing your suggestion concerning sub-moderators for each forum. There may be an opportunity for active members to apply or be selected for this.

Your other technical suggestions will be looked at by our technical team. Thanks!

Dear TIG,

As i told the last time i didnt put down all in my mind.

To have somewhere recent posts either after the last login of a member or recent posts during last one(two) days would be nice(if it doesnt exist yet). And could be nice to have that feature even without logging in displayed somewhere on right or left corner under "recent posts by date" on the main page and if/when a member logs in it displays either by date or after his/her last login. Up to you to see which one is easier, more viable etc.

I had in my mind but www.tekdi.com reminded me of that yesterday when I took a look!

Cheers,
Hayk

P.S. Always happy to help smile
P.P.S. The idea of moderation seems to me quite tempting !

I m again sorry have to retract my words concerning the recent posts seen from the main page without logging in..

I just checked with IE browser and it showed, but the lower part was partially shown while i used firefox and somehow i was never able to see the lower part where the recent posts were.. have no idea why this would be the case..

Anyway, i have seen it now and its the same when you are logged in as it is before logging in.
So maybe a slight improving over this would be, as i said before, having recent posts, but not messages posted that same day but since last login? I mean this is just some idea. And probably showing also the category where the recent post was made along with the name of the post, as is the case now, could be nicer, so that people have the general idea before clicking where the "activity" happened. Again up to you to see the "goodness" of these ideas..

Sorry again for my ignorance.

Dear TIG,

i wonder if it would be possible to introduce a feat allowing either not to allow multiple posts or to delete them afterwords by a person who posted.

In this way not only people who click submit many times their post will get just one posted but also it will alleviate the "burden" of some threads where you have to scroll down ten pages of same huge post in several copies just to get to the point you are looking for. This concerns especially big psts being posted multiple times whether intentionally or unintentionally.

Cheers,
H.

P.S. many of those multiple posts are caused by the "slow" (thats what is visible at least) processing of a submission and sometimes giving a message of "No free hub to process your request" or smth of this sort and but then when one goes back and refreshes the original thread one's message is nevertheless there...
I also get often "smahed up" on this "Please wait one minute before your next post" thing smile

Hi!

As you pointed out, you found the recent posts link here: http://www.takingitglobal.org/connections/discuss/search.html?s=&action=getdaily

When we revamp the boards, not only will it be easier to use, but it will look good too! It will be a major change for us in the backend, but all members should see the great improvement as well. We'll keep everyone updated!

Definitely a feature we will have!

The reason we added the "one minute between postings" was exactly to help curtail people posting multiple times by accident. We've been working hard on the server situation pertaining to "no suitable nodes available" and hopefully this error does not display very frequently any longer.

Also, those who post can delete their own posts, so it would also be great for those of you who do post twice by accident, that you delete your duplicate post smile

Thanks!
