the american dream
December 16, 2005 - 09:20 AM

Hi everyone ,
I'm going to do my Abitur(A levels / High-School Diploma)
in English about the American dream.
My question , especially for the American members , is :
What is the American Dream for you ?
Of course everyone else is invited to share his opinion about the American Dream , his manifestations , ideas , roots , influences etc.

Dreams for justice and peace following the commands of Allah

Considering my dream here in India for all in the rest of World , I would like that more and more men women follow the commands of Allah with respect to prayer and sharing of surplus wealth. Thus an American or whatever dream ought to be one that has pleasure of God in the center of all the actions.I would like to all the American youths to consider that piety is needed urgently for safeguarding personal futures and safeguarding the planet as exhibitionist and atheistic leisure engagements need to be avioded and raplaced with adoption of prayer and thanksgivign for leisure use 5 times a day.
Mastery in the manipulation of matter dominating the lives of men and women causing death and destruction can not and must not be part of American dream.
May Allah make more decisions for the guidance of all who fear

Thank you for your reply .
I agree on your vision of a more peacefull and just society , especially on the idea of "sharing of surplus wealth" .
Nevertheless , in my opinion there are numerous ways to reach this aim , not all based on religious belief and they do not have to . Some of my actions (e.g.the care for our planet ) for example are motivated by my love to nature and I may even see something godlike in it , but is it really necessary to believe in god for a good engagement ? Is atheistic engagement bad ? I guess not . Even Jesus said something like :
Not their words but their deeds will make you aware of them .
Maybe we can discuss about what to do about the destructive consumerist lifestyle which is for example embodied in the "American way of life" which is a part of the "American Dream" .

Hello, Flufur, you askes the question to the Americans, but I believe that they are mals placed to give a true answer. Because, it is their native universe.
The American dream is this dream that many young people of the world, not being the USA, make today. Each one dreams, each one aspires to live in this place where it makes good living without having to be concerned with this suffering which jallonne the course of considerable anybody for example on the African continent.
People think that America is a continent where all the living conditions are met to allow the their blooming. I't would like to say that there is work, hospitals, schools, short all that contributes to the efficient development of an individual.
The American dream, it is simply to leave the this universe of suffering for another best.
I'am sorry for may english.

You know - no one seems to be able to say anthing about Americans without it being negative.
since the question was asked I will tell you that no one can answer it better than an American.
The dream is different for everyone - but it is to be able to follow your dream - it is to be free - and see your dreams come true.
I grrew up wanting to be a filmmaker - and my dream is coming true.
Basically if you work hard you can be whoever you want to be - you have the opportunity.
as for making suffering happen somewhere else - NO ONE thinks "gee I hope others are suffering.
we think about how to acheive our own dream.
I am thinking about making films - this does not hurt anyone else in any way.
I am sorry our friend is so bitter - but I do not know how my American Dream effects him at all - or how it makes him unable to acheive his goals.
perhaps he would be better served spending his energy trying to achieve his own goals - rather than being bitter at the US which I am sure has done nothing to him personally.

cool - thanks for clearing that up.
And if that is what he is saying then he is right - it is about opportunity and individualism and following your own dream.
It is about not depending on the government or the government telling you what to do - but having the freedom to fly or fall by your own choices.

I agree: the American Dream is different for each individual. Personally, I'd like to see a little more equality. In all respect, its virtually impossible to create a completely equal, on all aspects, nation. The one thing I'd like to change, really, is the fact that religion is so strong. Honestly, I don't care if they say something about God on the coins, etc. The one thing I don't like, however, is when a law is made based on some form of religious belief. (for example: gay marriage, since one of the arguments against it is that marriage is supposed to be "holy." Also, for the American people, it'd be nice if prejudice wasn't so common. Of course, abolishing it would be impossible. All in all, I just want to be able to live my own life the way I want to, which is pretty easy to do here.
