Attempting to project my and my peers experiences of Punks onto the attitudes of everyone else; I see people as finding punks as affronting.
They (Punks) break the social norms imposed on them by society, choosing to be different for whatever reasons. People generally don't understand what these punks are trying to say, each having their own suspicions, all they see is a symbolic rejection of the mainstream values of that society.
Some people may feel threatened by that, others proud, it just depends on what more personal experience these people have had and how they are portayed more generally in the media and that person's peer group.
It all sounds a bit convoluted, but what I'm trying to say is that people find punks different, and depending on their existing beliefs and attitudes, they will judge punks accordingly.

None of the above really fits - punks are a mixed bunch.
Some are just out to shock people, and get off on their reactions. These I find hard to deal with.
Others are "lost" - looking for identity, cohesion within a group. These I pity. They wear punk-style clothing and piercings, trying to change, but those sort of cosmetic alterations won't get you anywhere.
And then there are the self-assured. It's what they want and they do it, bucking the trend or not.
What I'm trying to say you don't need to have a sense of self to be a punk, and you don't need to be a punk to have a sense of self. They are just like the rank and file, only different.
*reads the above writing again*
Damn- and that made so much sense when I thought it.... oh well

well, havent seen any punks around in india.
but have seen them on TV.
i think punks are people who have lost their direction in life. By piercing their bodies and having a goddy hairstyle, they think they are breaking the rules of the society and trying to be free and stuff. but i think (i could be wrong) that only a guy who hasn't been able to win or get anywhere in society will try to break free like that. either that or they have some mental illness. otherwise, when you know you are going to be ridiculed, looked differently upon, why would you want to be a punk. you cant expect to be a CEO of a multinational and at the same time be a punk who follows no rules.
punks need some sort of rehabilitation.

I am strongly opposed to some of the stuff mentioned above.
First, define "punk". Though it was once anyone who had extensive piercings and was into punk rock music, that definition has been altered to include anyone who looks physically different. Anyone who doesn't look "normal" or has an eccentric dress sense is immediately labelled as a punk.
Secondly, punk is defined as: "A young person, especially a member of a rebellious counterculture group." However, many of the individuals who are part of this 'elite group' are not rebellious...they just tend to dress differently. From myt experiences with people who are labelled under this category, none of them have been deviant in any sense of the concept.
Thirdly, the people that have been talked about above, lost and in search of their self identity, and even those who are just trying to be different: what is so wrong with that? why is that so 'sad'? Why does a need for group conformity prevail?
I think today's 'punks' are awesome because they dare to be different. I don't think too many people would be open to the ideals these individuals promote.
Frankly, just because they choose not to wear clothing from the GAP and choose to, in some cases, attain several piercings, does not make them deviant or second-class individuals.
Any thoughts?

HA.
simple
IDENTITY
PUNK=AN IDENTITY
PUNKS USUALLY ARE YOUTH
MOST YOUTH STRIVE TO FIND AN IDENTITY
Whatever kind of "punk" you are, you are a "punk" after all...and what is a "punk" but a noun...defined subjectively by the person who calls themself a "punk" and silently says "I am a person, I have an identity"

Punks: They are just people, like everyone else. So they have a different sense of style-- Who cares? We all have our differences, it's really no big deal. A lot of my friends can be classified as 'punk,' but they aren't really 'rebels'. Even I have sometimes been classified as a punk, though more commonly as a 'poseur' because I often wear clothes outside of my supposed 'style range', whatever that is. Not trying to shock anybody -- they're just wearing what they like, that's all! Honestly, the way society sometimes blows things over... We have bigger issues than just kids wearing clothes out of the 80's.

Classic Vs. Gothic

I have a very hard time understanding why "Punks" or "Goths" do things that will make them appear in a negative way, and then complain that people treat them negatively. Maybe it is because they feel like they never fit in the first place, but it is probably the need that people have to stand out, and change things. Most people are frustrated when they feel powerless to change things in a positive way. Perhaps, they don't see that talking and peace works, so they rebel against the very society that they feel is causing all of this pain in the world. However, they are rebelling so much, that they end up promoting the very thing they wanted to get rid of, hatred and violence.
The primary reason that society rejects them, is the fact that people will judge you on the way you look, no matter how you actually are. The saying, "You don't get a second chance to make a first impression" is valid, and first impressions are hard to break. When people speak, listen to, and wear things that can be interpreted as promoting violence, anger, hatred, and general suffering, it is no wonder why people dislike and are afraid of them. The growing drug and alcohol culture among the Gothic/Punk group only expands such dislike and rejection.
I personally think that most Punks are not bad people, just people looking for a different way of doing things. But, if you live a life surrounded by hateful messages, it ultimately effects how you think about other things in the world; and the cycle of distrust and hatred continue. While there are many who just think the look is 'in', they will be treated, by others, like the messages they send out ... negatively.
It brings me back to a discussion that I had earlier about the negativity that many people surround themselves with today and how that can affect our society in a bad way. You can reach that discussion by going to the World Economic Forum 2003 discussion forum, and clicking the link called "Culture through the Decades." You might find it interesting, and it might answer some questions you have about my post.

I doesn't matter to me how a person dresses, but punks are explicitly counter culture. If they looking a certain way for the perpose of calling attention to the fact they do not play by societies rules they can't be surprised when people judge them. That is what I never understood - I went to school in the Village in NYC and met 'punks/goths' every day and considering how much trouble they take to distinguish themselves how can they not expect people to judge them? Its just human nature.
My experience of punks is that they are confused about their identity and try to compensate by being super expressive about their confusion.
By the way, 'preps' are people who go out of the way to distinguish themselves as conformists, who consipiciously follow the rules and want every one to know how conforming they are. These people too are judged.

even though u and i know many others who also hate discrimination, it happens everyday and everywhere. people don't relly realize that ure doing it. it just happens. it's wrong and a lot of others know it, but sometimes, things like that just happen. i know that im not perfect and i sometimes judge others. but i know that it's wrong. wutever people try to not discriminate, sometimes people just get carried away. but just that we all have to make sure that we know that racism and agism and sexism and all the other discrimination is wrong. that is the important issue!!!!
