[Poll] Peaceful School
November 29, 2005 - 11:44 AM

I work at a school and am starting to realize how much stuff goes on... Bullying, Violence, Teachers bullying students and eachother Students doing the same. My goal is to become a peaceful school we have posted a pledge and had all of the staff and students sign it and every month we do different things around the school(pay it forward, food drive, contests). But I need help sending a stong message that bullying is a big dael and it needs to STOP.

Hi. I am an educator as well and understand the need to eliminate this sort of behaviour within the school system. I am, however, a little bit confused by your request. It seems as though you have already set goals, to which the students are supposed to adhere. In my experience, though, it has been difficult to see the realization of such "manifestos" without treating them as though they are an integral part of the curriculum as well. And while I know that you are holding events on a monthly basis, I feel that group discussions, homework assignments, and in class activities that deal with the issues that surround bullying are required on a weekly basis, if not more. Bullying often leads to anger within the victim, but almost as often stems from anger within the bully as well. Raising such subjects in class and finding alternative, peaceful ways of dealing with the type of conflict that is typical of youths requires more attention than a simple list of rules. We have to actually equip our students with the resolution skills that they lack- teach them these things from scratch without assuming that they know how to solve the problem, just as we would teach them a new mathematical formula to which they have never been introduced. The reason I say that I am confused by your request is because I actually don't know if this is the kind of "help" you were seeking or if you were actually looking for people to take part in the program. Anyway, hope your plan works out!
