Human Security Report 2005
November 24, 2005 - 06:13 AM

World experienced 25 armed conflicts in different parts of the world in 2004,the lowest number since 1976, there has been a decrease at large scale nearly 40 percent in the number of war and conflicts since the early 1990s,says the recently documented “Human Security Report 2005”, a new multi-government report.
The report inform us more that there is also a 80 percent decrease in the number of mass killings, UN diplomatic missions to handle armed crisis were as high as six times between 1990 and 2002, and there had been a significant increase in the number of civil conflicts resolved.

So, planet Earth today is more secure and peaceful place to live, if such is the situation in reality as described in the report, then for “us”, the peace lovers and workers around the world it is the time to “celebrate”. But for a moment when bitter facts like the daily death toll in Iraq, Iran receiving threats daily and delivering the same, Israel-Palestine crisis still claiming lives, Afghanistan still smoking, Sudan and Congo problems not all solved yet, no solution towards North Korean issue, Sri Lanka facing fresh waves of violence, riots in France, suicide attacks more common and wide spread (from Bali to Amman), increase of billions in global defense budget annually, strike the conscience hard, the heart then not gets convince to “celebrate”. Does your heart permit you to celebrate?

The results indicate the possibility that conflicts may be decreasing while people's "awareness" of world conflicts increases (in part due to the internet, 24 hr cable news stations, etc.)

With all that is going on, I agree that "celebrate" may not be the reaction, but perhaps you may take some solace from the idea that we might at least be moving in the right direction. Is it possible that increasing awareness and access to information for people makes conflicts harder to start?

It is true in a limited sense that"increasing awareness and access to information for people makes conflicts harder to start?" but we must also take in consideration that what percentage of the world population really gets aware and then what percentage of those having"awareness" really act?
