A common immigration policy for the European Union-your thoughts please

Hi all,
Hope everyone is well. Well I have just started working on my dissertation which is about the EU's attempts to construct a common immigration policy. I would like to hear what you guys think about this. Personally I am of the opinion that a common immigration policy is needed to address immigration as it is a global issue which requires a global solution. I think that it will make individual governments more accountable when it comes to how they treat asylum seekers and refugees. At the same time I realise that a country's internal politics must be taken into account. Therefore a balance has to be struck. The rise of fringe parties-such as the BNP in the UK-and in other parts of Europe (Le Pen in France) who seek to politicize the issue of immigration and the hostility immigrants face in some cases as a result of the media are all indicators that immigration policy desperately needs to be revised. Let me know your thoughts. Many thanks.
