Quran
November 12, 2005 - 07:24 AM

I have never read the Quran and I would like to. I need the English version, but I need help in which one to read. Which one is truer to the original? I don't really have money to purchase one, but I found this site:

http://www.islamicity.com/mosque/quran/

Please, direct me to which one. Thank you.

Dear Anna,

there are couple of crucial points when dealing with English versions of the Qur'an:

1) The term "Qur'an" is ONLY given to the ONLY Muslim Holy Book, revealed in Arabic language -not in other languages. Noting that Muslims, worldwide, no matter their language is, are required to read the Qur'an in Arabic in their prayers.

2) The difference between what Muslims believe to be "Allah's own words" in Arabic, and what different schools of thought interpret those words has to be considered.

3) Attempts to translate the Qur'an are according to [what different schools of thought interpret the holy text], and hence, translations are termed : "Translations of the MEANINGS of the Qur'an". They hence reflect the translator's translation of his own interpretation of the original Arabic text.Note that the same verse can have both lenient and extremist interpretation, depending on the interpreter's analysis.

4) Any attempt to interpret the meanings of the Qur'an should be in the light of some fundamentals:

- Good knowledge of Arabic language, prophetic narrations (Sunnah), and Qur'anic "Sequence of Revelation"

- Good knowledge of "Causes of Revelation", and "Aims of Shari'ah" is essential to understand Islam as a complete system of life.

* N.B> the webiste you referred to belongs mostly to the Wahhabi school of thought, with its roots dating back to Ibn-Hanbal's school, focusing on "tradition" rather than "tradition and reason".

Ready to help, any time

peace

Dear daughter
hope Allah reward you for your igtihad and asking to find the best
Agree with Ayman about the differences of translation which is used sometime to misguide people
Allah will reward you more when you try to learn Arabic Quraa. some people as Ayman said mistake and think that translation is Quraan but Allah preserved Arabic Quraan from change that you never find different copys but all muslims read the same Arabic Quraan. We tried according to asking of some members here to teach Arabic and for some months we tried to put Arabic pronounciation for people who asked to memorise in prayer and inshaAlah will modify it and revise for more help
for all muslim youth.: you spend more time learning life sciences , computer and have more time then why dont you give even 1-2 hours daily to learn Arabic to read Quraan, pray perfect as you will be asked in the last day to read Arabic verses and Ascend degree to Jannah. try to begin and Allah will help you and make it easy as he put light inside you
if you follow our thread please try to have audio record for Arabic surah for beter prounciation. it also contain Alabic letter pronounciation and writing on computer by mouse directly. you will see also the differences of translations
please be carefull and dont use the new american furcan it is not related to Q

DrBadr...I must thank you. As you may have guessed I am not Muslim, but seek to learn the truth. That is true that one could give 1-2 hours out of there day to learn. I will have to look up some words you used because I do not understand. I have seen that Furqan book here, but I have no use for new if it's not original that I could see. Okay, now I must check out those links.

Oh sorry Ayman I must put comma in writing
I mean that I agree with you " The term "Qur'an" is ONLY given to the ONLY Muslim Holy Book, revealed in Arabic language -not in other languages. "
so I did not mean you mistake but I mean that people who think that translation is Quraan
we are talking in the same point that Quraan is in Arabic only
salam

Thats GR8, may ALLAh reward u His best of the best bounties to u (OnCallforFaith) , It is very good that u have taken interest in learning abt Islam. In today's media, Islam is considered a terrorist relig, but really "ISLAM IS THE RELIGION OF PEACE" and QURAN says it.

It is not allowed in Islam to kill ANYONE, uselessly, So the ones who do this are not obeying their God.

My opinion 2 u is, u make Quran ur source of inspiration not the so called muslims. Believe me a true muslim is never the same as portrayed evrywhere - true muslim is as QUran says it.

U have the lives of Ex. CAT STEVENS, Mohammed Ali(Boxer), Yosuf Youhanna(Pakistani Cricketer) - How they got inspired and what they found in Islam? Evrything is available on the Internet.

Anyhow, best of wishes....
May Allah bless u with IMAN (INSHALLAH)
Take Care,

Yours,
Saad

Hi Saad,

Thank you for your words. Yes, today's media distorts everything in my opinion. The terrorism doesn't help, but I know the actions of a few should not speak for many even though sometimes it could be hard not to. However, if that were the case, it could be said about any group of people of other faiths; just because of a few you must all be like this. I feel the pain of that.

I googled Mohammed Ali and I found it interesting about him. I never knew he was, but then again I just liked him. Yes, there is good to be found in all.

Salam.

OnCallforFaith,
its all about how we see evrything, Paradigms as we say it. It happens that a person who used to be of no respect in our view becomes a respectable person in our view as we know something interesting about him.
Same is the case here, the media has made the world change its view for the Islam and muslims.
those are a little fw who, for their own profit, use islam as thier weapon. & they have bad named islam world over.

Lets not talk abt these little few evil doers, v have a lot other good ones to talk abt. There r many in this world who do a lot for the sake of humanity, but the remain anonymous, lets be like them.

Also see my new thread, in the discussions " Muslims are terrorists??"

For any help, I am ready!!
I'll keep u updated with any new link i come across on the Web.(Inshallah)
Take Care,
Salaam
