Invitation To E-consultation On Situation For Arab Women-urgent
November 12, 2005 - 11:50 AM

Dear Friends:

The Regional Bureau for Arab States at the United Nations Development Programme will be hosting a youth consultation session to incorporate the views of Arab youth regarding the Fourth Arab Human Development Report on empowering Arab women.

The Arab Human Development Report was first launched by the bureau as a means to assess the situation of the Arab Region in light of the problems that it faces. The first report, entitled “Opportunities for Future Generations” claimed that Arab States suffer from three major deficits:

1-Deficit in Science and Technology (Arab Human Development Report 2003)

2-Deficit in Freedom and Democracy (Arab Human Development Report 2005)

3-Deficit in Women Empowerment (Arab Human Development Report 2006)

Due to logistical limitations, only a small number of Arab youth have been invited to attend the consultation session to be held in Cairo on November 21, 2006. Realizing the importance of enlarging the scope of participation, the Regional Bureau for Arab States, is inviting you to participate in an E-Consultation Session to take place during November 15-19, 2006. The views presented by participants in the E-Consultation will be placed in a summary report, which will be presented to the Advisory Committee of the bureau, headed by Dr. Rima Khalaf Hunaidi, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Regional Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States, United Nations Development Programme.

The E-Consultation will aim to answer the following main questions:

1-What is the opinion of Arab youth on the situation of Arab women?

2-What are the challenges and solutions to empowering Arab women today?

3-What is/is there a relationship between the call to empower women and the call for democratic reform and more human rights in the region?

4-What are possible institutions that work in the region or foreign institutions that have attained best-practices that could be of use in empowering Arab women today?

If you wish to participate in the E-Consultation, please send a confirmation email to mohammed@youthlink.org by November 14th at the latest. Confirmation to participate in this session is mandatory, and is open to youth from Arab States only.

Before sending in your response as to whether you wish to participate, please consider the following:

1-Will you be traveling throughout the period of November 15-19, 2006?

2-Will you have limited email access during November 15-19, 2006?

3-Do you have any previous work or educational engagements during this period? (e.g. additional working hours, exam period etc…)

If the answer to one or more of the aforementioned questions is a YES, we understand that you do not have the time to contribute to the e-consultation and we kindly ask that you do not confirm participation, but we certainly thank you for your interest!

I look forward to fruitful discussion on this important issue with you all.

In Goodwill,

Mohammed Hamad Al-Ghanim
